Basically what you need is the script slidenormaltheif which is very easy to install... then you make a sphere cut off the bottom half polies and then add the edit normals modifier to each object (The half sphere and plant). Then select sphere as reference and plant as target and click steal. It will take the normals from the sphere and apply them to the plant and it will fix most shading problems that trees were affected by when after dark came out.
