1. There is a gradient - it's not exactly the same as the default one, but it's not that far off either; it's just slightly less prominent on the front flap to allow more contrast where it meets the pants.
2. What do you mean "the shoulders [...] not being connected"? They're shoulder pads. They stick out, that's what they do.
