Historically, the correspondence between Timur and Bayezid was full of insults and threats, but also had a diplomatic dimension. In game, maybe there could be an event chain similar to how the Ottomans and Byzantium interact in Rise of the Turks. If the Ottomans choose to appease him, Timur would never march deep into Anatolia (or at least have a very low chance to), which then redirect their march towards china.
My suggestion to put him on rails might be to create a specific CB against members of the Ilkhanate. That way, he can advance that way far more easily and it might encourage his AI to do so. I might also make his arrival trigger an event that makes Ilkhanate vassals disloyal, as right now they are far more stable than they were IRL.
