The way it was done in the StarWars - Lore is via starships. The reason why during the battle of Geonosis the trade federation used little to no close air support while the republic got to use them basically unimpeded was that the clone army had near total orbital superiority.
That was essentially the main role of the Acclamator-Class, land troops and then support them against enemy CAS and ground troops.
The republic relied heavily on fast-moving "gunships" for troop deployment and fire support and was aware of how easily they are countered by enemy starship - that's the reason why the SPHA-Walkers existed. (Anti-Starship walkers in most configurations).
Of course you had AA-systems such as the AT-AA walker but those were implemented towards the end of the clone wars, for units without proper starship support.
Otherwise it was really fun
is cool (:
Give it the air lift ability and some LAAT/c but once on the ground they should be slow, heavily armoured beasts - not sprinting towards the enemy like beetles on crack. :D
