It actually works at a 60 degree angle too. Over that the shell despawns before it lands so no mortars possible but a 15 cm howitzer on a Hummel should actually work. :)

So I just did some testing and without a barrel on the gun the HE shell can actually be fired at an approximate 45 degree angle and still not despawn before it lands so I might have a crack at the Hummel after all. It's a cool vehicle.
Max firing distance will of course be way too short but that doesn't relly matter in game anyway.

The thing with howiters and artillery in general is that it doesn't really work in the game. The game guns are only good for direct fire, not indirect fire like a howitzer would mmostly be used for since the shell trajectory is very flat nad the shell despawns waaay before it will ever fall back to the ground again if aimed only slightly up.
But maybe...

could you make a hummel? all the versions of it are either terrible or are for legacy.
plus, you could use the panzer IV chassis for it

Considering there are about 73 versions from bad to excellent of every conceivable German WW 2 tank in the Workshop I probably won't build a lot of "regular" German tanks in the future. With this one I already had the chassis from the Jagdpanzer IV and Bergepanzer IV so might as well put a turret on it. I might still build some more uncommon vehicles, especially those that don't really have a good vesrion in the Workshop, but I'm not gonna start churning out regular Panzer I:s, II:s, III:s Panthers and Tigers since there are so many good ones already.
