Detailed environments oozing with atmosphere. Many picturesque moments. Nostalgic lighting and familiarity. That warehouse entrance into a beautiful golden hour sunset filtering through the ancient glass windows. Tears in my eyes.
Atmosphere. The ambient soundscapes as you enter the graveyard and witness a citizen sitting on a bench, sobbing uncontrollably. Ravenholm tunes evince the desperate hopelessness plaguing humanity.
EP1 style pitch black section. Foreboding zombie screams as the last bit of light escapes the rapidly closing doors and darkness closes in. Then the ambient track drops. Professional and polished.
Emphasizes humanity's plight. I really feel for the citizen getting overrun by zombies. I hear the pain when they cry out "CPs!!!" Excellent worldbuilding.
Combat pulls no punches. Not afraid to explosively ambush you after a copter battle. Thrilling.
Ends just as it was getting good. Combine Assault is a delicious slice of Half-Life 2.
I particularly like the lighting and particle use + small environmental stuff like shoving over loose bricks in the first map.
Second map suffers heavily from Square Box Syndrome however, levels feel very barren, square, and iffy. Also, the bit where you run from the raid feels less like an exciting escape and more like just face tanking damage.
Third Bit with the bridge is quite cool, even if I wish the bridge itself was more involved in the fight/setpiece in some way, rather than just being there to take damage from the helicopter crash.
