You can completely drain your ammo pool by just starting a reload, then switching back and forth with your gun.
it would be more realistic for someone to be able to either A: keep their partially loaded magazine or B: pick it back up off the ground.
I see you missed the quotation marks around the word Realistic, no this isn't realistic, it's plain stupid to waste perfectly good magazines.

You can add a mechanic to actually spawn a magazine on the floor so you can pick it up later, or if you don't, then lose the ammo.
In that case, I believe the silenced and normal SMG are the only open bolt guns in the game, so they could be an exception if ChimiChamo is willing to go that far.
