It kind of felt like he was supposed to be a recruitable NPC from the start, and I was pretty surprised when his quest chain ended without a chance to rope him in. Much needed addition!

If we forced him to work for us - there's no doubt he'd bolt at the first opportunity xD

I would recommend it. Maybe it even works in an ongoing game, depending on how you interacted with Bastien so far. You can try using the mod in an ongoing campaign if Bastien is alive and you haven't talked to him at the refugee camp yet.
