Just use the vanilla Transparent Borders it works just fine.

Are the first few lines of map_modes.txt (like @zoom_step_near =, @zoom_step_mid = etc) the only change to achieve this effect? Because I've tried copying it to the AGOT map_modes.txt file, but it doesn't seem to work.
