Parts? I am guessing rummaging or looting other military assets from various governments or PMCs could likely get you the equipment to modify yourself. Ship guns could also readily be removed from ships along with plates but perhaps another government is utilising this protogen as a specific counter asset to primagen or something along those lines. Or maybe it is part of a PMC. I won't say anything is for certain so feel free to make up your own ideas cause they are almost certainly more varied than mine. I definitely like the ripping itself apart to be a crude clone of the primagen idea though. Plays into modern themes of lifetimes wasted trying to be someone else or maybe some other theme I can't articulate at the moment. Maybe it also doesn't need to tie in to a modern theme and can just be a tragic tale all on it's own.

As for the amputated limbs, I am almost certain doing so itself would be impossible. The amputation part, sure. The designing a metallic part, very likely not so much. Also, organics can heal themselves and are more adaptable, flexible, resistant to wear and when fastened to the already present limb interface, it is able to work far better with the protogen's systems than just metal limbs. The nanites that are present can also travel through the organic bloodstream which covers significantly more surface area than what any civilisation could realistically come up with without busting a couple decades of weaving nano wires or something. Those nanites improve the function of organic parts and their connectivity among other things.

Also, protogen still have limited nanites to act as immune system much like the visor's layers. I am not certain but properly cauterised flesh is also much better than completely exposed flesh. However putting some materials on the flesh sounds like something worth experimenting with.

The tragic tone to it sounds like an interesting alternative to think about it. In terms of limb replacement, it is almost always not worth the investment to make your army of slaves entirely metal when something like 30% cybernetics is enough.Pretty sure thats what protogen were supposed to be anyway. (organics have their own advantages too. Search up biocomputers) (putting all your eggs in one basket instead quantity over quality already proved to be a bad idea (primagen))

But how would the Protogen itself get the resources to modify itself like this?

Also thinking back, I think this Protogen could have had more drastic modifications plus more covering on its limbs to keep them from possibly getting infected through the open wounds it caused trying to jam the weapons into its own body.

I'm wondering why the Protogen didn't have some organic limbs amputated to let "superior" prosthetics take their place?

It would also make the fact it's trying to copy the Primagen have somewhat of a sad tone to it, as it's literally ripping itself apart in order to make itself a crude Clone of the Primagen.

Emulating the primagen could also be out of desperation but I will leave it up to you to decide. And it is more likely that it was modified by another entity or organisation but I like the idea that it did this to itself for its own reasons. Though this does imply more free will.

You have a keen understanding! That is almost exactly along the lines of what I was thinking while designing this protogen. Also, I was thinking about turning the guns into less of a cosmetic, keep an eye out for whenever I geto to that.

Also I wonder if You might make usable guns for this Protogen like You did with the Aerial Protogen? They both look like they'd at least have some power.

The smaller gun could likely be an automatic blaster of some kind and the other one could likely be a railgun or beam cannon

(Also in contrast to the artwork, I would make both of them fire red shots, as I feel it would fit in more with this Protogen's Palette)

I wonder if You feel this one (or whomever modified it) tried to emulate the Primagen likely because of either jealousy from the Protogen if it modified itself, or genuine fascination and a desire to be like the Primagen.

I wonder if You feel this one tried to copy the Primagen with all the bulky cybernetics jabbed into its body like Vlad the Impaler's signature method of painful acupuncture.

I actually saw that when I got the addon and looked closer...

I saw the fact that the armor plates were less specifically a PART of the Protogen more less as it was literally impaled into it.

It was very apparent as I took off the big (cosmetic) guns and looked closer at its arms that I noticed that they were crudely jammed into it. There's a lot of scar tissue and blood around the arms and where the cybernetics meet the legs.

It paints a very grim picture of what happened to this one Protogen in particular.

I guess a better way to put it is this: Primagen cybernetics are "built in" in that they are created with those whereas this protogen has had them more or less stacked on top of it's own systems. More like adding kevlar to a human's vest rather than incorporating the kevlar vest into the human's torso. I am sure the information on primagens is already well known to you, but it probably helps to specify specifics if we are getting into specifics.

I am aware of the lore behind them. It is quite interesting. However, this protogen is not so much a primagen as it seems, due to the fact that the underlying systems are still organic and the modifications are far more crude in nature. Or so I think. It is, after all, a 3D model and as much as I would like to model the actual anatomy and systems, that is beyond the scope of this model and what gmod can handle anyway. It is always nice to imagine stuff like this though.

also read somewhere that Primagens can have more diverse body plans and thus some could be quadrupeds or more Humanoid-divergent body plans.

So the line between Protogen/Primagen is actually being "Stretched" here since this is a Protogen with more cybernetics attached to it's body so it's somewhat straddling the line between Primagen and Protogen.

The Protogens are often joked about as being "robot furries" but they're actually more Biological.

The Primagens are the more robotic ones with the longer lifespans.

I would imagine this thing, being "in-between" a Primagen or a Protogen, has SOME less Organic parts in it and more mechanical, but below both precentages that a Primagen would have in mechanical bits and what a Protogen would have in organic bits.
