You might not be using the 2D unit cards (it is an option in the settings). It is only designed to work for 2D, because the other method uses totally different artwork behind the "cards".

I also hope at some point they sort units on type (melee/ranged/cavalry/artillery) instead of all just on price or whatever they are sorted by now in armies

It only works with 2D unit cards, not 3D unit cards, as it says in the description. I checked, and it works fine in that regard (you would have to change your unit cards to 2D in the options menu).
