I think the red side makes the armour look like gold or bronze, and yes, a soft neutral colour. You could try using the texture for the original; I think that is a good bronze tone.

I didn't design it with paint in mind, because i was afraid of making any too particularly large of an area be paintable, The cape is to allow team color to still be visible on the back because it covers a decent chunk of what is normally team color by default.

however i did toy with the idea of color styles to match other helmets when i was working on the concept, but ultimately dropped it.

I do have to agree with mr.poopy pants and big boobie lover on this one. I think the cape helps provide additional team recognition to soldier's torso which would have been covered up by the chest piece otherwise.
