This was great! I jumped twice. The first time from a zombie popping up out of nowhere while I was using the Alyx tool, the second time from the ghost/misty figure and the windows breaking. I consider myself to not scare that easily and I have played plenty of horror games. All this is to say that you've done a great job creating a horror experience!

@Ronnie1001 Hi, yes the lore was supposed to be elaborated upon in future maps.

In extra-ordinary value you hear the consul say 'i have a particular way of using the voices of others' he is able to consume people and replicate their voices among other things.

I had been developing a prequel campaign for about 2 years then lost the files as my pc broke and i forgot to back them up.

But in that campaign you would have seen that 'Elden' was the head of a small resistance group and would end up being consumed by the consul.

I do hope to either one day retrieve the files or restart development based on the old build i managed to save on a usb.

are the voices in this mod supposed to be the same people from Extra-Ordinary Value?
I thought that the non distorted voice was a fake voice put on by the consul or something but the ending of this mod makes it seem like they're an actual person

This was a really well-done scary map! The zombies hanging from the ceiling made me get goosebumps; it's super fun to be scared like that!! I also said "oh ♥♥♥♥" when I saw the zombie I killed get back up. Great 30 minute thriller :)

And yes you're right even the most basic story imaginable goes a long way in giving the player a purpose to continue their journey in your map

At least you had a story!

I can't believe how many of these mods lack this important quality.

Anyway, I went through my spreadsheet and found that the average score I have from 0-10 is actually about 2.25; and I only check mods that have 4 stars or better by the rest of the community, since I believe those with less than 4 stars are just not worth my time at all.

Another thing going for you is that it is creative. I haven't seen anyone else try this or go to this extent with an idea. You're right, it's just not "for me".

I think other people would and do love it.

@ⱤΛ̶t𝔥_☣★⭕⃤ Fair enough i'm just pointing out that it is unfair to hold a small mod under the same scrutiny as a full blown release.
Although i do genuinely respect the honesty, your criticism is more about a core element of the design of the map rather than aspects that could be improved being the changing environments. The idea is that the place you're in is unstable and could change anytime but of course if that makes you feel cheated then i fully accept that this map is not for you.
So what i'm really saying is that your criticism is more than valid but lacks constructive feedback as there's not much i can do about your subjective opinion on the mod. But like I say thank you for the feedback and you'll be happy to know that this is the only map i have made or am currently making that involves the changing environments mechanic.

You know how companies have surveys 1-10 and you're supposed to give them all 10's or they get into trouble or the app wants you to fill in comments about why you choose a non-10 score? It's sort of like that here. People seem to only give the best, happiest comments or keep their mouths shut. Same with Youtube, everything, everywhere.

I'm not that way. I start at 0, and you have to *EARN* it. Nobody ever gets a 10 from me. Perfection does not exist. There is always room for improvement.

The highest personal rating I have ever given for an Alyx Mod is 9 for "The Nest". After that, it's 7.5 for both Arcane Path Part 1 & Silver Hill. Red Dust got a 7. Everything else is less, with an average of probably 4 or so. I am probably the toughest critic in all of steam.

It's not that I would create a better mod. But I can still look at a movie or listen to a song and have a strong opinion about it.

I understand that this place isn't real or whatever, but the only time the turn-around and things are different mechanism worked was when I turned and a zombie was standing there. The rest of the time it felt gimmicky. Especially when I turn around and doors had changed to locked again, etc.

The voice was okay. The hospital equipment was good. The location of the pistol was good. The fact that zombies get back up again was interesting.

But ultimately I felt like it was cheating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to turn around and things have changed. Just make a bigger, better map. I played it for about ten minutes. Got to a place where the voice said that "she belongs to him now" and it seemed to restart. And restart or not, I said to myself, well that's enough of that nonsense, and stopped.

The scariest stuff was the zombies attached to the walls. Other than that, it was cheating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and I felt ripped off. And I want my money back. Refund!

@collindrennen Wow thank you very much for your in depth review and of course for playing! Atmosphere was a priority for me as it's what I enjoy building the most. Silent Hill was definitely and influence for me as well as resident evil 2 with the main room that you return to multiple times. Thank you again i'm really glad that the tension was felt throughout.

- The zombified enemies are a spectacular addition, since it made one quickly discover that shooting them would only ever be a delaying tactic. This made the couple of puzzle sections tenser than my butt cheeks in a proctologist's office; a sense of time running out with unstoppable enemies is quite the potent combination.

- The couple times a 'boss enemy' (?) would appear and disappear were effectively used, and even though I did not fight them, they kept making me think of what might be waiting around the corner.

- I definitely would have liked to seen this level take place on the Nostromo refinery ship in the movie 'Alien'.

It's always nice to see a case where I judged a book by its cover, and get proven wrong. This is gripping HL:A horror that Silent Hill and PT would be proud of.

A job more than well done!

Played on a i9-13k, 32GB RAM, RTX 4090 with a Valve Index (120Hz refresh rate). Observations are as follows:

- If I could sum it up in one sentence, it may be 'Come for the atmosphere, stay for the mood'. The voice over at the beginning and end, performed by Thanos's brother I reckon, did an amazing job of setting up the atmosphere/mood. The human voice at the very end made me think of the Matrix.

- The overall graphics had such a decaying, depressing, lack of life feel to it, that i actually enjoyed it. The 'set pieces' were large (no real claustrophobic areas, I thought), but with the zombified enemies slowly shambling towards you, it felt as though hell was slowly closing in on you no matter where you ran to.

@Hypernukeleosis Yes I'm glad you noticed the RE reference. Re2 Remake was a big influence for wanting to make the place seem believable and to actually make zombies more intimidating than the alyx campaign. Really happy that you had fun!

Yeh the resin bundle bit was a weird easter egg thing just to show that you're in the same universe with resin and combine like if alux can find resin everywhere then surely other people will find it lol. Man, this was really fun, I didn't expect to get into horror maps this early (if there's any horror map contests, you should apply this level). I like how the gym was the safe room that you always went back to, just like RE, that was really well done.
The layout and scares were done really well, overall I had fun and it was great to play something like this before Oct. comes around.

The beginning dialogue was actually really good and gave me goosebumps, I realized just how much you can twist the source engine (even in Alyx) to be a total horror game.

I dont know why there was resin since i didnt stumble across any upgrade stations but nonetheless i liked the idea of zombies getting back up.

The ending was a little disappointing but other than that this is a seriously good map. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

PLEASE make more of this! I crave good HL horror

@Shranzi yeh I know what you mean, most of the rooms in this map were built from reference images so I was using textures that matched what I saw but I agree more variety could be there. There is a wet area with dripping from pipes in the ceiling in the basement. Good luck with your map I look forward to seeing it on the workshop one day!

the only thing I would try to change is to give the map more life and character. I would also add more variety to the textures. What would also look good with your map would be plants/foliage, wet areas where water drips from the ceiling (from pipes for example).

I myself started yesterday to build a map and know that this is all easier said than done ^^. I do myself currently also quite difficult with it (my first map, i.e. absolute beginner). I have no idea what I want to do ^^. I just build on it

And I agree with the shotgun the only reason I didn't include it is because I didn't want the player to feel too powerful in this map I was concerned that it would kill tension. I'm really happy that you enjoyed expect more from me in the future!

Very neat map! I agree with Difox, very reminiscent of Nightmare House. (1 and 2)
A few thoughts/suggestions: I thought the zombie reviving mechanic was really fun! I liked how it turned ammo into a resource that sort of depletes itself if you wait long enough. On a related note, I feel like the shotgun with its somewhat elaborate reloading mechanic and inherent ammo scarcity would lend itself very nicely for horror maps like this.
Lastly: it's probably best to not use Arial (or similar) fonts for written text inside the level. Doesn't really fit the vibe? That being said, I thought the story was perfectly serviceable and the ending was creepy enough, albeit a little sudden.
