hey! figured it out. Turns out it's the game's Ray Tracing! (which I had off in settings, but had to kill in engine.ini to get to actually be Off)

Apparently one side of the car has the letterings the right way up while the other side is upside down

Right, but aren't there letterings that face the other way around, like the Goodyear Eagle tyres?

I think the tyre lettering is upside down for me - shouldn't the lettering be facing outwards, not inwards towards the rim?

I've wanted to do them for a long time round, so I no need to make variants of wheels with and without the mesh walls, I am glad! ^w^
