If you want to make the sounds more like LITE, try changing the damage multipliers for all suits to 0.4 -- this will play the sonarPingWaterClose sounds at most, which is how LITE works. You can counter this damage reduction by changing the global damage slider, which doesn't affect sounds.
Thanks for using my mods, and don't worry about asking questions :)
however, the closest i got while toying with the real sonar config in the meantime was by making all the diving suit IDs have the anechoic property set to true in the config and reducing the suit ping volume slider, which honestly suffices for me
overall i don't even know if it was actually an intentional property of the lite mod, but what i distinctly remember was that when i last used it all of the diving suits would only play a light ping sound regardless of my distance from the source of the sonar (i think it was the sonarPingSuitFar ones?)
either way, thanks for you help!
however, i have the tinnitus and distortion volume sliders set to 0% and i'm still getting the terrible scratchy distortion and high pitch tone when i go outside in a normal diving suit. the only way i can currently lower the volume is by changing the water ping volume slider which will either mute any noise indicating that sonar is active, or just make the distortion quieter.
i remember when i last used this mod i would still get a ping noise when wearing a suit, it just wouldn't come with any of the ear-bleeding sound. could this be a bug on my end?
For me, I don't want the damage in as I would find it annoying in my playthrough but I can see why others would want it.

Was about to start a new MP playthrough and would love to have this in my list.

The standard version seemed somewhat unrealistic to me. Utilizing a full 250 dB sonar in deep caverns would cause the sound waves to bounce off the walls, potentially damaging the submarine with the constant echoing. It makes sense for submarines in Barotrauma to employ less powerful sonars, just strong enough to detect walls and creatures within a 100m radius: the Lite version.
Real military sonars can detect ships up to 30 kilometers away. But, of course, that wouldn't be practical in Europa's cave systems.
Pirate submarines don't turn on their sonar so there's nothing to hear, but next update they will.
