2. UnlitGeneric is the only shader that works on ropes in Gmod with transparency support, but at the same time IT GLOWS. Which makes it pretty useless for this use.

Rather late, but base files are required for the chain textures to be added as well, since they allow to expand the base list of ropes for tools (and from what I understood, vanilla rope list is static), and chain textures and base files are separate addons to allow for "customization" of your library of rope textures, which was made with an account that anyone else would also make textures that work with the base

I'm genuinely surprised nobody else has thought to make chain materials mod for rope-based constraints before. however, are the base files completely optional? given that it says "if you want to make your own custom ropes"

you need to install the required base, as that's the lua thing that replaces vanilla rope selector with one that has additional stuff to make it expandable so these chains would get added. if you had it installed and they still don't show up, then that's workshop fault as it seems to fail mounting some addons when you have a lot installed, although you can technically fix that by finding the "missing" addon, extracting its .gma and putting it in your local addons

i rather fail to see how having a base that allows more or less easy extension of in-game rope selection to be ruining anything, as well as current addon is more of an example of how to add more ropes through it. although it is gonna conflict with other addons that replace rope adding lua file. idea behind having a base was so other people may add their own ropes and perhaps upload them to workshop too
