jackmo2009, because some servers have a huge distances between planets. For example, on the server I played I spawned in 28,000km from the center planet where were main trade stations and PVP area. I had to build a special ship which were able to cover this distance and used a magnet pad to attach/dettach another ship. Well, I really should post this dettachable jump modue/ship sometime)
