Honestly, thats true, I feel much better making higher-res sprites due to the amount of creative control you have over the sprite. And most of the community prefers higher-res sprites for some odd reason

Now, to answer your question, it is hard to determine why regular-definition mods are superseded By high-resolution mods.
Could be that the creators of those mods have a following, thus showing that it works and can make you successful?
Maybe you can make more details with a high-res mod than one that abides by the vanilla PPG style?
I'm not too sure myself, but, those are some factors.
