As far as I can tell, Vampires are just an inferior version of the Soulbeast, which is something I really hate to say, because I love bats, and it's nice to have a spooky anthro bat race in Terraria.
The Tongue skill is interesting, but not nearly as reliable as The Soulbeast's claw attack.
It also has rather pitiful range, and speed, and once you do hit your target, not only do you need to stay near them, but also must wait for the life essence to travel from the enemy to you, similarly to Moonlord's leech move, when you do get healed, it isn't much, it takes quite a while to regain full hp with this ability.
And yeah, not being able to do it in your base form is also kind of a problem, I'd be fine with it, if the transformation could use tools too, but alas.
I noticed that prior to the bug fix, you were able to use both the primary and secondary ability that the derpling has, giving you an incredible boost in Vertical jump height, and now they applied a bit of a cool down to when you can use the racial ability.
They just don't work...

"Drop one of the Invisible Mask/Shirt/Trousers items (make at a workbench using cobwebs) into Shimmer and you'll get the Entangled Strands item to change races mid-game.
It's lost on use, so you might want to make a few!"
Also if someone edits the config mid-game, then it should automatically sync to all other players so nobody gets desynced, config-wise.
