I'm not entirely sure. It may depend on how close the coal is to either the top or bottom sections, I haven't tested it.

The bottom path being the floor of the module and the top path being the deck over the gun that has the suspendium bullet on it.

You are required to connect both the bottom and top paths on the left side of the module.

Having a slight issue with this in that the game is telling me after placing this in a design that not all the modules are mutually accessible, even if this is connect to the rest of the ship, and even if this is the only module the ship contains.

The Suspendium Bombardment Ray is neat, but it isn't what I'd prefer. Directional-wise, mainly.
