When i added this and started a new game, it literally took the option of choosing a portrait away and starts you off with the default dude. Uninstalled it. problem is still there. Ummmmm.
HunterKiller 26 mai 2017 la 10:21
It's all good and thanks for creating it. I'll stick with the default style. I don't really look at them much anyway. Not until I'm ready to hunt them down. :)
Crache  [autor] 26 mai 2017 la 9:28
@HunterKiller: Nope. You'll have to read the page's description to see what the goal of the mod was if you're not sure. It's not something I expect everyone to care about, but that's the great thing about mods being optional. :)
HunterKiller 26 mai 2017 la 6:51
Is the before & after in those screens, backwards?
TimeTrooper 13 nov. 2014 la 1:46
Don't like the game's portraits at all really. :/ Still waiting for a mod that brings in some decent ones.
Crache  [autor] 9 nov. 2014 la 19:20
@Lucifer: I probably could reproduce their art style for the portraits and add more, but I'm satisfied with the existing ones and not sure it's worth the time. Have heard of other people that were possibly creating new portraits, but not sure if they're still working on them.
ToxicMushroom 9 nov. 2014 la 16:51
just wondering , since you have done this one .. " sure , this idea is a bit more complex i guss.but still . shouldent be that hard again to do / add ..
my point is .. add more Portraits to the gam e - other faceses , but of course in the same style / desgin ..

Sweet, thanks for the help! I'm gonna enjoy hunting down and wiping out the Syndicate as Robocop!
Crache  [autor] 4 oct. 2014 la 21:41
First, you should keep in mind that the images you convert to DDS should have a width and height that are each a power of 2. So 64x128 or 256x256, etc. The portraits themselves are 256x256, so that is the size you'll want to be sure to use. If you don't have photoshop or something, then you can setup a portrait image in any image editor you have available, then save it and convert it to DDS with http://www.xnview.com/en/xnconvert/ though XnConvert has terrible DDS support it should at least spit something out that SPG2 can use.
Spiral Hunter 4 oct. 2014 la 21:14
Any suggestions on what to use? Tried to convert a picture I pulled off deviant art to DDS with Paint but it either doesn't show up at all, or if I try to replace another picture but keep the name of the one I replaced in case it is a scripting issue, it just shows a black square and crashes the game.
Crache  [autor] 4 oct. 2014 la 20:38
Yep, you can just open them with an image editor that supports DDS files or use nvidia's DDS plugin. You'd be able to swap each portrait out with another one from the game or paint your own portraits. Pretty sure there is someone working on an alternative portraits mod of some sort.
Spiral Hunter 4 oct. 2014 la 18:32
If you were able to alter the game portraits, does that mean you know how to swap them out or add new ones? 'Cause I'm not gonna lie, the portraits the game gives you to choose from for your captain suck and I would love to put in my own.
Crache  [autor] 2 oct. 2014 la 18:11
Nice to hear. Glad it worked.
Falcon Grey 2 oct. 2014 la 16:48
Erased the mods folder then re-installed and activaged the Enhanced Portraits. No problems when flipping through portraits this time. The fifth one came up like the others. Went on to start the game with no issues this time. Seems the change in exporting fixed the issue whatever it was.
Crache  [autor] 2 oct. 2014 la 11:44
@David I've put out a new version of the mod. Doesn't change the mod in any meaningful way, just the way it was exported. It made no difference here, since I don't have this issue, but let me know if it fixes the issue for you.
Falcon Grey 2 oct. 2014 la 1:27
It's the 5th portrait that is missing. It appears after the initial crash. Then when I select the ship and tell it to load the game it crashes. Then when I restart it goes into the game. It's the only mod loaded at this point. I even went as far as to erase everything in the Mods folder and forced it to re-download the portrait mod again. Same pattern. First cycle through 5th is blank. When you hit it a second time still blank and crashes. When restarted it is now there but crashes when you select your ship. This is using the Freeroam game.
Crache  [autor] 2 oct. 2014 la 1:12
If you wouldn't mind, while you're cycling through the portraits could you tell me which one it crashes on? Is it always the same one, or is it random?
Falcon Grey 2 oct. 2014 la 1:11
Quite, I'll try reloading the portraits mod and see
Crache  [autor] 2 oct. 2014 la 1:04
That is odd, I've flipped through them all before with no issue. You sure it didn't occur before the mod as well?
Falcon Grey 2 oct. 2014 la 0:38
Just had a crash after installing the portraits while flipping through them during new game creation. One of the portrates come up as a blank black space.
Börnsen 1 oct. 2014 la 2:11
Okay. I´ll try on. And will report :)
Crache  [autor] 1 oct. 2014 la 1:53
First time I've heard that. Sure you didn't install other mods at the same time? Maybe something got corrupt during your download? Hard to say.
Börnsen 1 oct. 2014 la 1:46
My Game crashes if i use your mod. Any idea?
Crache  [autor] 29 sept. 2014 la 20:14
I believe there may at least be one person working on more portraits, but that was not the point of this mod. Also, when this mod was created it wasn't possible to select your character when starting a new game.

If people care enough, someone will make a mod to give you more options.
Elentári 29 sept. 2014 la 20:12
I just want more portraits, I don't want a restyle of everything ...
Crache  [autor] 29 sept. 2014 la 5:19
Some of the portraits are NPC-only I think. So the ones you're given as options to start as in free-roam mode are specifically selected by the developers.
[FnB] Faeln 29 sept. 2014 la 5:16
My game only has 10 Portraits.. what am I missing?
Crache  [autor] 29 sept. 2014 la 4:14
Took a look at the files now that SPG2 is out of Early Access and I don't see any need to update this mod. There were a couple special character portraits added, but I don't believe they should become a part of this mod.
Crache  [autor] 28 sept. 2014 la 3:41
@wrtnsq: that's not really what's going on. if you are familiar with photography, there is an art and science to putting emphasis on the subject/focus of the resulting image. i won't claim the subtle modification i've done to these portraits is any kind of masterpiece, it's simply something that bothered me so i made a mod. your thought process is understandable, but it overlooks the actual point of the mod.
Skellige 28 sept. 2014 la 3:20
great! )
Crache  [autor] 27 sept. 2014 la 12:20
Ah, ok. :)
Pestb0ile 27 sept. 2014 la 12:18
I cheked it also, seems after a reinstall i still just can choose such few portraits, so absolutely not your mod's fault :)
Crache  [autor] 27 sept. 2014 la 11:53
I haven't updated this mod for the 1.0 release yet and haven't looked into what they've changed about portraits. However, this mod primarily changes texture files and shouldn't limit which portraits you can select. Will look into it soon.
Pestb0ile 27 sept. 2014 la 11:48
Hmmm since i tried this mod i just can chose between 7 or 8 Character Portraits..
I don't think thats right? xD
Crache  [autor] 27 aug. 2014 la 15:41
@Chairman Wang: most things in art are subjective, but you are keen to note that many of the differences between the images appear to be a reduction. certain qualities between the 2 are reduced, and intentionally so. some things are blurred, making details harder to see. that is on purpose. some colors have been toned down. that is on purpose. it has less to do with judging individual technical qualities of the image and more to do with the final result.

for the qualities i was aiming for, these have proven to be an enhancement over the default. if you prefer other qualities in the portraits, then this won't be the mod for you. :)
Chairman Wang 27 aug. 2014 la 15:07
tbh these seem like "downgraded" pics not enhanced.
TheLuckyAce 8 aug. 2014 la 13:14
Thanks!
I'll try that out, as its just a "style" thing I ont care if I need to change it often :)
Crache  [autor] 8 aug. 2014 la 8:13
@TheLuckyAce Use a text editor and edit the Steam\steamapps\common\Starpoint Gemini 2\Spg2\Base\Portraits.wdt file. You can modify this file to change your portait and character name without having to rename DDS files in the Textures\Characters\ directory. Adrian_Faulkner is the default character and you can change the .dds file next to that entry to some other DDS file and your portrait should change. I haven't tried it myself, but I assume if you change "Adrian_Faulkner" to "Scooby_Doo" your name should change to scooby doo as well. Give it a try.

Keep in mind that any changes you make this way will be overwritten when they release an update. You can either go through the modding tutorial and make a mod out of your changes, or you can just make a backup copy of any files you change and copy them back over whenever a patch is released.
TheLuckyAce 8 aug. 2014 la 7:46
Yeah, they already confirmed that in the forums but I hoped that its much faster via mods ;) they have so much work to do, if I would know how to do it, I would try it myself^^
Crache  [autor] 8 aug. 2014 la 5:16
@TheLuckyAce The developers of SG2 are adding an option that will allow you to select a different portrait you'd like to use in freeroam mode, but if you start with the story campaign you will be using the main portrait. I wouldn't be surprised if that comes with a name change option.
TheLuckyAce 8 aug. 2014 la 4:30
Also possible to chose a image I like?
If not, possible to add this, together with an "namechange" option? :D
Crache  [autor] 19 iun. 2014 la 16:02
@Dark_Ansem / @<fluffy>: Another thing to keep in mind, is that the saturation levels won't be perfect for every portrait (though they will still look fine), because the saturation levels are adjusted for use over all portraits and not just a few specific ones. There are some portraits in game which you may not have seen that were insanely oversaturated. You will know them when you see them. In any case, that brings the average saturation down across the portraits a little bit, but overall they still look good.
Crache  [autor] 19 iun. 2014 la 16:00
@<fluffy>: Suppose that depends on your perspective. The goal was to make the background less distracting, draw more attention to the face and to make the face easier to read. In that, it succeeds. If other criteria to you are more important, then it may not be the mod for you. :) Thanks for taking the time to check it out though.
almostpilot 8 iun. 2014 la 10:25
Yes, great. Thanks!
Dark_Ansem 8 iun. 2014 la 2:48
I believe it needs a bit more saturation..
ByteRyder 7 iun. 2014 la 8:44
Nice bit of image processing, mate - good stuff!
🌟 taipaN-[CE] 🌟 5 iun. 2014 la 16:59
Dannngg nice one!
Dark_Ansem 5 iun. 2014 la 6:19
could you share the action set? I'd like to uniform my potrait pack to this style.
Crache  [autor] 4 iun. 2014 la 14:26
With Photoshop. I created a set of actions while continuously testing that the results looked passable on various portraits, then after lots of tweaking, ran the actions across all of them as a batch. Took less than a minute to process them all.
Dark_Ansem 4 iun. 2014 la 12:03
how did you do this?
