I like the idea but god the idea of your character wearing socks while running through shit like water and mud just makes my skin crawl.

We originally had a Tartan pattern on Demo but it looked a bit noisy. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take a look

Cool idea!
I like the Sniper's croc-socks and Scout's Bonk socks best. The fleur-de-lis on the Spy's socks is a nice touch.

The Demoman's sock design is a bit plain and boring. I admit there's a limit how much you can do with socks in regard to visual jokes without making them novelty slippers.
A Tartan pattern would probably be too stereotypical. I don't know, perhaps add the warning logo for "EXPLOSIVE!", or the letters TNT? Or a pirate skull-and-bones symbol (with eyepatch)?
Or one of the national emblems of Scotland:
a) The prickly purple thistle. (There are heraldic designs for that plant, see the link below)
b) A unicorn rampant.
