my recent small hydro fighter took one small roundtrip around the icelake (equipped with three small tanks) and crashed close before being able to redock.
it feels WAY off. especially considering that modern jets are much smaller and still being able to fly for much longer time ..
If we consider other perks of hydrogen working in both space and planet I think the simplicity argument still gives enough space for hydro to outshine atmo/ion in that area.
In vanilla, a large hydrogen thruster produces about 1.5kN per L. If that 1L of H2 was converted into electricity, it could produce 2kN using an atmo engine. (Only 640N with an Ion).
With this mod, a large hydrogen thruster produces 3kN/L, which *is* better. But since electricity conversion is also buffed, that same L of H2 would produce like 28kN of thrust with an atmo engine, or 9k of thrust with an ion engine.
IMO, converting hydrogen into thrust directly with a hydrogen thruster should be more efficient than converting the hydrogen into electricity and then into thrust.
With this mod, with one large H2/O2 gen and one large H2 engine, 1,000kg ice takes 20s to be turned into 20kL of H2. This consumes a little less than 3kwh. It then takes 150s to convert that 10kL into about 313kwh of energy. A net gain of about 310wh/kg of ice.The ideal setup Is then to have 7.5 H2 engines per H2 generator, which produces 56MW of power and consumes 50kg/s.
An example: Ignoring the efficiency penalty on batteries, filling a large battery in vanilla requires ~270,000kg of ice, with this mod, it requires ~10,000kg of ice.
So in total, ice gives about 28x as much energy as vanilla.
