It should also go without saying that you need to know how to pose faces using bones in order to allow Pikachu to express like an actual Pikachu; official models of Pikachu before this one simply swapped out textures of Pikachu's face, and indeed, the game still seems to do that for the partner Pikachu outside of cutscenes and that screen where you get to play with them. These are the first Pokémon games to use bones for expressions on Pokémon, or at least, the first mainline games to do so.
If you don't know what you're doing, of course Pikachu will seem weird when they express.
