Attila seems to agree somewhat. A number of barbarians have pike phalanx formations which I haven't seen historical evidence for. In the game, they lose without a buff because of the panic and defense loss from being flanked by a swarming force. I use them where that can't happen especially towns.

Late Roman armies do have pike and spear phalanx though. It was mentioned in Emperor Maurice book and it was also mentioned hundreds of years later by Nikephoros Phokas. "Greek Phalanx" style of units will never go away in greek speaking Roman Empire up until perhaps 1204.

It should help some of their pikes but not all.
This mod mods special abilities and weapons.
If they used minimal attila weapons, there will be less.
Feel free to use this as a base for an MK mod.

Hmm. That would be out of scope of this mod. It is very easy though. I am releasing a bugfix mod tomorrow that can have that as a feature.

Many mods add more lethal pikes in the weapons table. You can assign the weapons to the units. This mod mainly modifies the formation stats.
If you create powerful pikes and use this mod, your pikes will be very overpowered.

No time for the knockbacks at the moment.

I slowed down pike formations in the latest patch. Nice testing Angel.

Can't find the pike square and pikes are not slower. What do you mean by you would "recommend it be assigned only to mid-level spear units, not tier 1 as it is powerful"? isn't that why you use a spear wall? because it's better then no formation lol

The best looking/least liked unit gets some well deserved love. Using pikes for street fighting is awesome.

I thought pikes were developed by Greek states to defend narrow city streets. The current Attila pikes are only meeh at that. This mod tries to make them good at street fighting but poor at open battlefield fights. They aren't fast enough to counter most cav unless the cav has a deathwish with a frontal charge. These pikes in formation have less buff versus melee cav than normal spear wall. So they are not the best choice for battle and autoresolve against nomads except in cities. If you wish to conduct the tests, I can include that in this mod.

yes, front+right, this is most of the time anyway.
from the side and back there are gigantic nerfs anyway. and units turn to the flank attacker.
melee defense is slightly "better", but maybe shield defense is fitting better historically.

overall in these ages pikes were not the frontal assault gold standard battle winners, used more more for controlling parts of the battlefield, especially demotivating cav to attack.
also more some kinda backup, because their vulnerability to missiles, which were far stronger than 800 years ago.

of course, for the intention of buffing pikes, your mod does well.

From my reading forums and testing, shield defense only works from the front and left. I haven't tested it beyond this pack though in custom battles. I notice a dramatic difference when the attack occurs from the side for these pike units who lack normal defense, though there might be a factor I can't see.

The garrison mod does not affect recruitment. It does give pikes to the western roman faction though garrisons though. I do this to allow it to be compatible with the max number of mods.
If you haven't noticed, the pikes here are overpowered when they can't be flanked such as a narrow street like they should be. They fold easily on the edge of a formation in field.

Why don't you ask on that mod page? The garrison mod does not affect recruitment. It does give pikes to the western faction as garrisons though.

If you want to use pikes and watch or use them in battle, you need this mod. The ERE has powerful pike units. My garrison mod gives the WRE pikes in garrisons. Like all my mods, it has a low profile designed to work the maximum number of mods.

Thanks. In the Grand Campaign, I don't think the Roman factions have pike units. So it won't work with a mod that adds them?

It is designed to be compatible with all mods. It doesn't touch land_units. However, if the mod has land units with custom pikes in the melee weapons tables, it won't have much effect.

What DLCs does this affect? Just the main campaign or Charlemagne, etc.?
