Actually, you're thinking of "Assault Weapon" — that's the political term. "Assault Rifle" is a military designation for any rifle that is capable of multiple firing modes and fires an intermediate cartridge, though it's commonly used as a political term by those who don't do their research.

An example would be the M4A1 vs. the AR15: the M4 is an "Assault Rifle" due to it's ability to fire in both full- and semi-automatic modes, while an AR15 is just a "Rifle" due to only being able to fire semi-automatic (though, of course, it could be modified to fire in more than that, but aftermarket modifications don't count).
