They won’t, especially with world chunking. If you’re more than a few grids away, they won’t even show up and will have zero effect at all

Storid, don't you think it's bad for the world in multiplayer? if they are cheap to produce and so small, they might slow down the server in big amounts. just thoughts..

Hi Artasan. They do not decay — at least they are not supposed to decay. They are blocks, instead of “inventory items,” and should persist forever.

Try attaching some of these caltrops to walls in the meantime, they might do what you're looking for. I keep coming up with new slightly evil uses for them :)

Someone else had asked for that too. Like, I like the idea, but also it can end up being weird. A sharp shard of iron like a caltrop, you can imagine it will always hurt. But if you're walking slowly and accidentally bump into a piece of wood, it's hard to see that causing you mortal damage! But there might be a way.

how do you feel about something like.. say wooden spikes that can go in holes / ditches ? maybe be put on walls ?
