I think that http://janusvr.com/ is probably closest to realizing that dream of a "multiverse".
Granted, it involves the entire Internet, rather than just Gmod, but I think it has lots of potential.

What would be AMAZING is if someone made a pretty large map (as a base) like bigcity or even flatgrass and then have different portals around to LINK different maps like cells! Similar to the Half-Life games.

What I mean by that is for example a map with a base of bigcity, then you walk into a hallway that leads to a completely different map, or via / through a door or something, which loaded automatically. It would be a big map to link other maps together giving a kind of freeroaming open-world feel to Gmod - yeah sure one would have to deal with the loadingscreens in the map transactions, but that is unavoidable and goes for most open-world games anyways. Anyone willing to realize this? That would be simply amazing! :)
