Correction nearly half a year later, the name probably comes from the fact that the knifesmithing guild made it and just called it a knife.

For the kriegsmesser name thing I found two things. One is that in Germany back in the day you could only carry a sword if you were part of the upper class, so everyone else just called their swords knives to get around it. The other one is that the kriegsmesser just looked like an over sized knife and had some knife-like design choices.

Oh... I didn't really see the mirror-flip on other two-handed melee weapons, only on hairstyles, asymmetrical armor/clothes (scouter's visor) two-handed ranged weapons (bows, rifles), so...
Thought it might be because of it's alt-fire ability.... Oh well~ You're the experts.

Starbound takes images and mirror-flips them; that's why the active items change hands on players and npc sprites.

It's pretty far off tbh, i've watched RWBY myself and i don't think they're similar, aside from the whole burning sword thing.

Besides, this one is based off of an IRL design.

It's a vanilla sword rewarded from the third arena quest. It's a reskin of the Firestorm's Fury sword. You either have to complete that quest or spawn in the sword.
