look up maunsell sea forts (or other sea forts)... maybe the two starting zones could be mocked up as the decks of naval ships?

Yes, we already thought of making the platforms like oil platforms out of water (because we weren´t able to get fog at the bottom of the map), but the idea with islands is even better (wonder why I hadn´t thougt of that earlier).
The bug: happened to me sometimes too, i think i allready know how to fix it, but at the moment the island/water thing is in progress so i can´t fix it now. But soon!

ever thought of turning this into a water/island map? (for texturing and what not) i do think this set up would be kind of fun. i also ran into some build bugs, on most of the little islands, you can build up in the air above them. i can post a ss if need be.

Interesting concept, but it needs good texturing and some decor to make it seem like a real map.
