I didn't really like the pew-pew nature of the space cannons, so I modded in a more thunderous sound.

Sound in space? Actually, yes. Your ship still needs atmosphere to keep you alive, so YOU hear it. THEY don't. At least until a hypervelocity tungsten projectile airs out their domes.
