Steel is For Honor's currency, its used to purchase many things.

#Steel is obtained by daily orders, about 300 steel each daily order.
#Weekly orders give steel too, about 500 steel each.
#Events are very rare occasions where you can get massive amounts of steel and XP for completing certain tasks. mostly 2k steel each.

Most of the orders and events are completed by playing certain modes.
Do this for some time and you'll get many steel to buy cosmetics with and upgrade your ♥♥♥♥!

This was just a short guide to express my feelings with the community which says steel is very expensive.
