Important mechanic in this game is that everything revolves around HARD SAVES.

When you auto/quick save, get achievement progress, or even just change settings; if you do not hard save after that and just quit the game, all of that change and progress is lost the moment the game shuts down.

Even if you are in the main menu, changing a setting: you have to load up a save, hard save onto that and only then you can quit the game.

A HARD SAVE imprints all auto/quick saves, settings and progress into the SAVEDATA.

So always hard save before quitting and blame the Japanese.

yk im not much of a pc gamer person and i thought this was common knowledge, so i never trusted auto-saves even on consoles... but thank you for the heads up

Too late for me ;-; I was only quick saving and after 3.4 hours my game crashed and I lost all the progress :/

Before exiting the game, save once with quick save or just save normally, and then go to the main menu for the read text and quick saves to save every time. This is how visual novels usually work, except for some games. This is how to save your save data for it to not disappear. :Mayuri:
