Game Difficulties

There are four different game difficulties: Easy, Normal, Difficult, and Suicide. Along with enemy speed, landmark distances, end-game score, and event occurance rates, the game difficulty also affects how many hours of scavenging you get in the beginning of the game.

Easy: This mode gives 18 hours to scavenge for items. It is the easiest of the four difficulties and is reccomended for starters.

Normal: This mode gives 12 hours to scavenge for items. As the second easiest difficulty, it is for the confident beginner or the returning player who wants a more layed back game.

Difficult: This mode gives 8 hours to scavenge for items. It is the second hardest difficulty and is nothing to laugh at. It's not recommended unless you've played the game before as it will test your skills.

Suicide: This mode gives 4 hours to scavenge for items. It's the hardest difficulty and as the name implies unless you are very confident in your abilities, it's suicide. This mode took me MANY tries to finally complete with several strategies I picked up while playing the game.

Choice of Vehicle

Your choice in vehicle will effect 3 things: speed, durability, and reliability. By choosing a different car these aspects can be changed. Cars are unlocked by completing certain tasks in-game (see unlocks section). The station wagon is the most basic and all-around car because it is the first unlocked and has no bonuses.

Speed: Affects miles traveled per hour.

Durability: Affects vehicle damage taken.

Reliability: Affects how often car parts (batteries, tires, mufflers) break.

Certain cars also have bonuses that can help the player out. For example, the SUV's bonus "Roomy" makes it so there are less mishaps in the car.

Starting Supplies

* Note: Most supplies can be gotten by doing jobs in town.

You will get a certain number of hours before setting out on the road to scavenge for these supplies. The number of hours you get depends on the set difficulty.

Fuel: A necessary item for moving on the road. No fuel = no progress.

• Can be bought in stores and traded for
  
• One gallon of gas lasts 4 hours of travelling
  
• It's best to have at least 8 starting out
  
• Easily lost while travelling

Food: This item is essential to survival and health recovery.

• Can be bought in stores, traded for, and scavenged
  
• Scavenging is the easiest method for obtaining (depending on skill)
  
• Depending on how rationing is set, one person will consume 1-3 ounces of food an hour
  
• The higher rationing is set, the more health is retained and recovered

Medkits: The one tool for healing the driver and pulling pals out of incapacitation.

• Can be bought in stores, traded for, and scavenged (with the combat technique "medkit scavenger")
  
• Good item to have on hand in case of emergency
  
• This item is very rare and expensive so stocking up in the beginning of the game is a good idea if you're one to take a lot of damage

Ammo: Got an empty gun and need it filled? Ammo's got you covered.

• Can be bought in stores, traded for, scavenged, and is given out (20 rounds) at the start of certain jobs
  
• Comes in packs of 10 when bought and scavenged
  
• Good to have at least 20 rounds on hand when scavenging or driving and PLENTY when doing jobs
  
• Be careful not to run out during any kind of event or you'll have no choice but to take damage (or exit the game which has varying effects depending on when exiting)

Money: Whatever currency you have, it'll buy you something in the zombie apocalypse.

• Can be traded for, scavenged, and gotten by selling items
  
• Used to buy other supplies at shops and upgrades to your car and character
  
• Not the most important item, but is usefull to novices and if you're in a pinch

Car parts: Batteries, tires, mufflers and more! They've got it all at the *COUGH.

• Can be bought in the auto shop and traded for
  
• Every car comes with one working set of car parts so using scavenging hours in the beginning of the game isn't necessary
  
• Good to keep 1 extra of each part on hand so you don't have to go through the trading process
  
• If you lose a part on the road and don't have one, you will need to stay put and trade until you get a replacement so you'd better hope you have food and possibly a yard sale sign
  
• These items can be upgraded in the auto shop to have special functions (see upgrades section)

Scrap : Got a car that needs constant fixin'? Better catch the scrap addiction.

* Note: Not available to scavenge at the beginning of the game, but you do start of with a few regardless.

Additional Info

• The skin of the driver serves no purpose other than aesthetics and different skins are unlockable by completing tasks (see unlocks section)
  
• The first member in the car can get certain buffs the other 3 can't
  
• The driver will not take damage unless hit in combat and can only be healed by medkits
  
• After all other party members die the driver takes damage just like a normal party member
  
• If you're without medkits and in mortal danger, it may be a good idea to kill off all remaining party members so that the driver can be healed by resting
  
• Carlito should always, ALWAYS, be the last of the 4 party members (not really)

One of the main functions of the game is traveling on the road. There are several things that can happen while traveling. This includes weather events, event instances, and mishaps. See the Road Events section. There are 3 tabs on the road with multiple sub-options.

All 4 party members, excluding the driver, will take a set amount of damage every hour spent on the road according to the set rationing, upgrades, and health of each party member.

Health:

This tab shows the health of the driver, car, and all living party members. It is updated every hour (in-game) and after every minor event or change in health.

Stats:

This tab shows statistics including: amount of fuel, amount of food, zombie activity, miles to next landmark, and miles traveled total.

Stop:

This tab stops the car in the middle of the road giving the player multiple different sub-tabs and options. When stopped, the player can access the party, car, and supply tab which all have the same options as in any town (see town section). When finished in the stop tab, press leave to continue on the road.

In the newest expansion, player are able to choose their route on the road. This enables the player to take a shorter route through radiation zones, play it safe with a longer route, or choose a path depending on the landmark at the end. Radiation is discussed further down in this section.

Tombstones

Tombstones are the more common of the two offroad events and have much less player interaction. This type of event is triggered when your party sees a tombstone on the side of the road and you click yes to go and investigate. You are then greeted with a tombstone marked with an epitaph that can mean nothing, be a reference to something, or be written to make you laugh. After reading the message, the player then receives either a piece of equipment, such as food or scrap, or is greeted by a zombie. In the case of the zombie, there is a quick time event in which you either shoot the zombie or have the party leader take damage.

*Note - This is one of the only instances in the game where it is necessary to shoot zombies in the head to kill them.

Text-based Sidequest

The less common offroad event sequence is known as the text-based sidequest. It is initiated when you agree to investigating something going on off the side of the road. There are many of these events and in them you choose your own route by reading a story and making choices. In many of these there are items to gain such as food, car upgrades, or even a baby, but there are also opportunities to lose supplies and party members. Though there are many of these, they do reoccur so try to remember the route that worked out best for the next playthrough.

Leaving So Soon?

There are 2 different events that can occur immediately after leaving a settlement. They are both unique in that aspect as they do not occur at any other time.

Motorcycle Gang:

The first of these two events is where a motorcycle gang follows you off of the settlement. In this mini game you must tap to move your car up and down trying to run over the bikers. If you cannot run them over before they match your car's speed and take aim, they will shoot at your vehicle damaging it. The event will end after a certain number of bikers are defeated. There is nothing to gain from this event, but car health can easily be lost.

Horde of Zombies:

The second of these 2 events is where you are required to pass through a horde of zombies. You are given the options to either "wait for the horde to disperse," "try and sneak through the horde," "break out the guns and fight through," or "hire mercenaries to help you through." The horde itself is ranked by its ferocity and attentiveness. The more ferocious they are, the harder it will be to fight your way though. The more attentive they are, the harder it is to sneak through. Waiting takes an hour of your time and has the possibility to change the disposition of the horde. Hiring mercenaries isn't always an option, but when it is it will cost money and time to guarantee your safety. Having a ninja muffler or chainsaw windows can also assure your safety, but if you aren't so lucky to make it through the horde you can lose supplies or even a party member.

Action Events

Events that happen randomly while driving forcing you to fight or die. It is a good idea to always have spare ammo and medkits as these events can happen at any time.

Surrounded:

This is an event where you are suddenly surrounded by zombies. It is very similar to the defense job in town. You stand atop your car in the middle of the screen and fend off zombies from all directions. If a zombie touches the car, the main character takes a hit.

Stampede:

During this boss, you do the opposite of what you would do during a motorcycle gang event. You must avoid lines of zombified animals that run at you from behind to keep your car from being damaged.

Bandit Rush:

This event is somewhat similar to the stampede event above. In this mini game you avoid rocks and cones coming from the left side of the screen. These obstacles slow you down and eventually allow the bandits reach you from behind and damage you. Among the obstacles that slow you down there are also ramps that give you a speed boost. Survive for a certain amount of time to escape.

Bandit King:

This is a new event to the final cut expansion. For this to occur, a party member must leave your during your trip without dying (this most often happens by them wandering off and getting lost). You will then be greeted by them again as the bandit king after you leave the airbase settlement. You then fight the bandit king and his gang. After winning, you are given the choice to either let the bandit king rejoin the party or kill him.

Environment

There are multiple weather based events that can impede your progress if you aren't equipped. These include heat waves, blizzards, fog, and sand storms. These events slow down your travel speed unless you have car upgrades to counteract them. Snow tires, tinted windows, and other car upgrades allow you to disregard these events.

Mishaps and Miracles

These are the most common events to happen while traveling. They generally consist of one text box and can have either positive or negative effects.

Zombie bites:

In the event of a party member being bitten, don't panic. Being infected is only relevant when a character is incapped. If the incapped character is bitten and not attended to, he or she can turn into a zombie and end the game in one quick turn. At this point one should either put down the party member or scramble to find a medkit.

Radiation:

Radiation slowly poisons all party members. It makes it easier to take damage and harder to heal. It is gotten when traveling through a radiation zone and is slowly cured when you leave the infected area.

Sickness:

Sicknesses like dysentery make a party member's health bar turn red until they pass. They make damage hit harder and healing more difficult. Sicknesses go away after a certain amount of time so it's usually best to sleep them off.

Injuries:

Injuries like broken bones spring up randomly and take out a chuck of a players health leaving no residual effects.

Party Tab

The biggest function of this tab is to display the health of each party member. The subtabs also give options to improve the health, or end the life, of any individual member. This tab is also accesible by stopping on the road. It is helpful when you suddenly need to rest to keep a party member alive.

Subtabs:

• Rest: Choose a certain number of hours to spend resting. Each hour will take away from your game time and consume the amount of food dictated by your rationing. In the newest expansion there is a button that allows you to go fishing while resting. This takes 1 hour and allows you to fish up from 1 to 5 pounds of food. You can also snag a zombie, scrap, or even a car upgrade! This process does not change the amount of health restored by resting.
  
  
• Medkit: This option allows you to utilize the medkits you've collected during your playthrough. Medkits heal around 1/3 of the health of a player. In the newest expansion, you are forced to do a timing based event when applying a medkit to an incapped party member. The closer you get to the middle of the target, the more health is restored. Medkits are also the only way to restore health to the party leader when there are still passengers alive.
  
  
• Kill: This subtab allows you to kill 1-4 of your passengers at any time. You can do this for absolutely no reason at all if you'd like. The main reason to kill a passenger is to protect yourself if they are incapped and bitten. You can also kill them off to reduce rations per hour. Lastly, this is a strategy of mine, when the party leader is the only player left alive, they take damage as a normal passenger would. It is a good idea to kill off all of your party members if you are dangerously low on health and don't have any medkits. Keep in mind that every party member you make it to the safezone with gives you a score bonus.
  
  
• Talk to Stranger: This is the most useless of the party subtabs. By clicking this you are given a random wall of text that can either mean nothing or give you a small hint. There is no other point to this than that.

Car Tab

The car tab shows you the health of your car, its stats, and allows you to repair your car. This is the second of 3 tabs availible when stopping on the road.

Subtabs:

• Repair: Specify the amount of scrap you would like to use to repair your car and regain car health. In older versions this function was completely based on chance whether you fail or succeed. In the newest expansion however, you must tap the screen at just the right time in a ddr style minigame to see how much car health you can regain.
  
  
• Upgrades: This subtab is where you can see all of the car upgrades you have obtained. You cannot edit, add, or remove any upgrades from here so its only purpose is to show you the upgrades you currently have.
  
  
• Set Pace: This allows you to choose the speed at which you would like to travel. traveling at slow sets you at 26mph, normal at 41 mph, and turbo at 56 mph. Traveling faster will get you to the safezone in less time, but keep in mind that the faster you travel the more damage your car will sustain.
  
  
• Road Map: The map shows you how far you have traveled in miles and on the map. It also shows you your route and cities and landmarks you have passed. Lastly, it displays the miles left til you reach the next landmark.

Supply Tab

This tab displays the time, zombie activity, and the amount of supplies you have. It is the last of the 3 tabs also availible while not in town.

Subtabs:

• Scavenge: This subtab allows you to scavenge for supplies. Please continue to the Jobs and Scavenging section for additional information as there is a lot to this function.
  
  
• Trade: Trading allows you to get supplies you need like tires and fuel for other random supplies you may or may not have. Every hour there are 0-3 trades to be had. After you've exhauseted all of your trades for the current hour, click keep waiting to spend 1 hour to try and get more trades. Sometimes this function is needed if you lose a tire or need gas in the middle of the road. In that case hope that you're lucky and have the supplies you need to trade.
  
  
• Rationing: This allows you to choose the amount of food each party member consumes per hour. Small portions gives everyone 1 oz per hour, medium portions is 2 oz, and large is equal to 3 oz. If you have a baby on board from a road event, the baby will always consume 1 additional oz per hour. The baby will quickly die when you run out of food. Remember that the more food you eat per hour, the more health is sustained on the road and regained when resting.
  
  
• Combat Training: This subtab is very similar to the car upgrade subtab. It shows you the combat upgrades you have bought, but doesn't allow you to modify them at all.

Town Tab

This is the tab that isn't availible when you aren't on a settlement. Its purpose is to allow you to barter and earn money and supplies.

Subtabs:

• Buy: From here you can buy whatever is availible in town. Items that can be for sale include fuel, scrap, food, medkits, and ammo. Each settlement has different prices and a different amount of supplies availible.
  
  
• Sell: Here you can sell the same supplies that you're able to buy. Just like the buy subtab, each settlement has their own prices for the goods you sell so be sure what you're getting is worth what you're giving.
  
  
• Jobs: This is where you can take on jobs for payment. Please continue to the Jobs and Scavenging section for more information.
  
  
• Combat Trainer/Auto Shop: This subtab changes depending on the settlement. It can either be the combat trainer or the auto shop. The combat trainer allows you to buy skills for $80 that enhance your abilities in combat. Please see the Upgrades section for a list of these upgrades.
  
  The second option is the auto shop. Here you can buy tires, mufflers, batteries, and car upgrades. You can also pay money to have your car repaired instead of trying to do it yourself. Prices vary by settlement on car parts. Go to the Upgrades section for a list of car upgrades.

Leave Tab

This is the last tab availible while in town. The only purpose of this tab is to allow you to continue on the road. Make sure you're fully stocked up before you press this because you can never return to a town you've left. After pressing this tab, you will choose the route you would like to travel (in the final cut expansion). This is also the time where you can run into either the motorcycle gang or horde of zombies events. See the Road Events section for more information.

Jobs

Jobs are only availible in settlements. During these events, you complete tasks to earn different supplies. They all have varying difficulty and rewards. All jobs damage the party leader if you fail. Some jobs like bandits and defence give you 20 rounds of ammo before you head out to complete the job. I will cover all jobs from all expansions.

Types of Jobs:

• Defence: In this job your character sits in the bottom middle of the screen with a gun of your choice. Zombies appear from the top of the screen and walk towards you. The objective is to kill all of the zombies that appear before they reach you.
  
  
• Bandits: In this job you must kill the bandits in building they're hiding in. You can only take them out when they poke up their heads to fire at you. The same is true that you can only get hit when you pull back to aim. Kill all of the bandits to win.
  
  
• Recovery: This is a fairly easy job where you run to the right side of the screen until you hit a box. Zombies will appear from all sides of the screen and chase after you. Try to only kill the zombies that are in your way and outrun the others. This way you save ammo and time.
  
  
• Graveyard: In this new job you traverse a graveyard to get to a package and then get back out. This all happens while zombies pop out of the graves that surround you.
  
  
• Hit and Run: This is another new job where you use your car to hit as many zombies as you can. You are given a time limit and for every 10 zombies you hit your car is repaired a certain amount.

Scavenging

Scavenging is an integral part of Organ Trail. This is where you can gather money, food, and scrap to be able to survive your adventure. The amount of zombies that come out during scavenging depend on the listed zombie activity. The amount of food or scrap per item is dictated by the sprite. The shopping car, or halloween basket in the halloween skinned game, gives the most amount of food for example. Avoid zombies and gather supplies til the time runs out to win. If you touch a zombie, you take damage and lose some of the supplies you've gathered. There are also many different types of zombies AND other enemies you may encounter while scavenging.

Enemies:

• Zombie: This is the most average enemy in the game. It walks at a constant pace and only takes one bullet to kill.
  
  
• Crippled Zombie: This variety is fairly similar to the basic zombie. It's differences include its jagged movement and appearance as well as its ability to move through foreground objects that the player and other zombies have to walk around.
  
  
• Bloated Zombie: The fatter looking zombie known as the bloated zombie takes 2 hits to kill, but isn't any different otherwise.
  
  
• Fast Zombie: This zombie plays peek-a-boo with the player. It doesn't move whatsoever if you're looking at it, but runs very fast when you look away. It is very tall and has its mouth hanging open.
  
  
• Radioactive Zombie: This zombie limps after you leaving a trail of radioactive ooze behind him. Walk through this trail to get damaged.
  
  
• Bandit: The only non-green enemy you can run into while scavenging. The bandits will walk on screen and try to take an item that hasn't been collected yet. If you grab the item that the bandit is going for the bandit backs off. You can also shoot the bandit to get the item back. Zombies will also kill bandits if the 2 interact with eachother.
  
  
• Zombie Dog Boss: This is one of 2 bosses that appear randomly while scavenging. In this instance, 2 dogs chase after you trying to kill you. They are killable with 3 shots each so it's not wasting ammo. They are very quick and will lunge out at you if you get too close.
  
  
• Zombie Bear Boss: In the Halloween version of the game this boss is skinned as Frankenstein's monster. This boss isn't killable, but can be slowed down. Shoot at it to slow its speed so that you can avoid it. If you go too long without shooting it it gains speed quickly. Outrun it until scavenging ends to win.

Weapons

In the final cut expansion of the game you have the ability to choose which gun you use while scavenging or doing jobs. There are 3 different guns that each have unique aspects.

Guns:

• Rifle: This is the basic gun from the original game. It shoots a single bullet and then quickly reloads.
  
  
• Shotgun: This gun has a spread shot that uses four bullets at once. It has a slower reload and is less accurate.
  
  
• Pistol: This gun is like the rifle except that you get 4 shots before having to reload. After those 3 bullets are used reloading takes a bit longer.

There are 2 different types of upgrades in-game. Upgrades can be classified under Combat and Car. Combat upgrades can be bought by the combat trainer using money and are relevant during combat sequences. Car upgrades can be bought in the auto shop or gotten in event sequences. These give upgrades to the car that can help out in all other aspects of the game.

There are 5 different slots on a car for upgrades and each slot has corresponding parts. The 5 slots are labeled as: Front, Misc, Top, Back, and Bottom.

Front:

• Fog Lights: No slowdown in heavy fog
  
• Nev-R-Break Battery: Batteries never need replacing
  
• Cowcatcher: No slowdown from rubble
  
• V6 Engine: Travel faster at the expense of the car
  
• Sup-R-Last Batteries: Less likely for the battery to die

Misc:

• GPS: Never lose the road
  
• Radio: Has a chance to heal party members
  
• Yard Sale Sign: Faster and more frequent trading partners appear at stops
  
• Sno-Cone Machine: Don't consume food while looking for traders or while repairing
  
• Air Freshener: Party members in front take 1 less damage (Player & 1st party member)

Top:

• Armored Windows: Less likely to get bit by zombies
  
• Carrier: Never lose a gas can
  
• Chainsaw Windows: Automatically succeed fighting through hordes
  
• Solar Panels: Move slowly while out of fuel
  
• Tinted Windows: Unaffected by heat waves

Back:

• EZ Grow Garden: Generates 1 oz of food an hour
  
• Sup-R-Last Muffler: Less likely for muffler to break
  
• Tool Chest: Scrap repairs the car more effectively (more health gained per repair; %chance of repair unaffected; appears to affect repair shop repairs too)
  
• Nev-R-Break Muffler: Mufflr never needs replacing
  
• Ninja Muffler: Automatically succeed sneaking through hordes

Bottom:

• Rain Tires: No slowdown during rainstorms
  
• Snow Tires: No slowdown during blizzards
  
• Offroad Tires: No slowdown during sandstorms
  
• Sup-R-Last Tires: Less likely for tires to break
  
• Nev-R-Break Tires: Tires never need replacing

These upgrades affect the driver in all combat instances. There are 3 slots to hold these upgrades and each slot can be overridden by a new upgrade. Most upgrades cost around 80 dollars.

Upgrades:

• Action Hero: Chance to not use a bullet when you fire
  
• Faster Movement: Move 5% faster in combat
  
• Faster Bullets: Bullets travel 50% faster, don't ask why
  
• Faster Reload: Reload in half the time
  
• Body Armor: Take 20% less damage from losing a combat
  
• Carry Capacity+: Carry up to 100 oz. more food from scavenging
  
• Medkit Scavenger: Medkits have a chance of appearing while scavenging
  
• Money Scavenger: Money will have a higher chance of appearing while scavenging

In the final cut version of the game there are 2 final bosses. First the original sequence happens and then the final cut boss appears afterwards. I will be covering both in this guide.

Drawbridge

In the original final boss, you must go out and grab 8 gas cans to operate the drawbridge to the safe haven. You can carry 2 at a time and the layout is very similar to the recovery jobs. If you are hit by a zombie, one of your party members takes over for you. If you run out of party members, you are as good as dead. Ammo can be picked up along the way and if you're standing near the car your members can actually protect you with guns of their own. Get all 8 gas cans back to the car to win.

Giant Octopus

In the final cut version, after you complete the drawbridge event there is a final boss fight with a giant octopus. In this fight you must avoid its tentacles while driving down the road so that your car isn't damaged. Then, you stop driving and stand atop your car to fire at the octopus. Fire at its head to damage it but make sure to shoot the tentacles that try to hurt you before they get too close. After 3 instances of shooting it repetedly in the head, the boss is defeated and you can enter the safe haven. Once you enter, the game ends and your score is calculated.

There are several easter eggs placed in the game by the developers. The ones listed are only a few of the many hidden.

Tombstones:

Many tombstones are references to old TV shows, people, and events. There are hundreds so try to see which ones you can figure out.

Baby:

It is possible to add a baby to your party during a certain text-based sidequest. The baby stays with your party until you run out of food and are unable to feed it. He/she eats 1 oz of food per hour and gives you a score bonus if you take the baby all the way to the safe haven.
