It doesn't pass consistency check and unless the server runs it, it won't work.
99% of the server will not run the mod because of the whitelisting rules
There are 2 options.
1) Modify core\shaders\Modify ViewModel.surface_shader so that it reads in an additional opacity texture. You can use Model_alpha.surface_shader as an template. You would need to provide opacity textures for all view models (just one texture all white).
2) Modify core\shaders\ViewModel.surface_shader so that it calculates the opacity on the fly. You can use ns2\models\alien\alien_alpha.surface_shader as a template. It takes a variable "hiddenAmount" as external parameter, but you might just hardcode it to 0.5

Although I had to build everything manually to apply changes, seems that part of the guide is out of date.
