Unlike other HL2 mods, Fast Detect has a screen overlay that some people may not like. Here is what it looks like:



In this guide I'm going to explain how to get rid of it.

If you check in steamapps\common\Fast Detect\cfg\FastDetect\cfg\, you'll find 2 files, autoexec.cfg and lens_dirt.cfg, with their relevant content posted below.

autoexec.cfg:

exec lens_dirt
lens_eboss

lens_dirt.cfg:

alias lens_eboss "r_screenoverlay dirt_eboss/dirt"
alias lens_no "r_screenoverlay null"
bind kp_end "lens_eboss"
bind del "lens_no"

We can notice that "lens_dirt.cfg" is automatically executed when you run the game, it's this file which is responsible for the screen overlay.

If we take a look at the content of "lens_dirt.cfg", we can come to the conclusion that the screen overlay can be toggled on and off by pressing the End and Del keys on our keypad. We can also type the aliases "lens_eboss" and "lens_no" in console, it will have the same effect.

However, even if you do this, the screen overlay may come back.

The best solution is to rename, comment (add "//" at the beginning of every line) or empty "lens_dirt.cfg" (because it's used by other configuration files besides "autoexec.cfg"), this should get rid of the screen overlay for good.
