This feature was in the previous game but on a screen button and i thought they removed it.
Now i learnt about it, just before finishing the game, at the very last quest ( i think but for sure..)
I was complaining about it so much... i think thinking this game is sooooo worse than the previous because they removed it. i was complaining so much... i would have enjoyed the game so much better.. i lost so much enojyment... ach jo..
As for your question...i am not sure. You can experiement and see what happens. I just left the gear on all my guards. I did take some in my party to level them up a bit, except my main and favorite characters because sometimes when you leave a party member in a town, they will not rejoin your main party.
