Are you tired of holding down the W key to traverse through the seemingly infinite horizons of Afganistan or Central Africa? Feeling soreness in your middle finger or are you just plain lazy? Then look no further, because this guide is the answer to all your prolonged walking needs! Great for conserving your W key since it is the default forward movement bind for 99.99% of PC games.

This trick has been tested in the field and is proven to be effective in both main missions that require a lot of travelling as well as free roam.

Before we get started...

There are some things you need to do first:
-You must have the Steam in-game overlay enabled in order for this to work.
-You should set a single button to active/deactivate the in-game overlay (my preferred key is '~' the squiggly key, AKA the key you press the activate the console in some other games. Since I rarely play anything other than MGSV and I never, ever need to use the console, I won't run into problems where pressing the squiggly key opens up the console and the overlay at the same time in games like TF2. But if you do plan on using the console in Source games, then a good idea is to set it to a single key that's easily reachable.)

Note: this does not work in MGO and using this in FOB is highly not recommended. Also works for any action that requires pressing and holding a certain control, such as holding F key for using the Intel Scope.

Now for the good stuff

To activate this hidden option to automatically walk/sprint/crawl/drive/whatever in the direction you desire is actually quite simple.

All you need to do is follow the steps below for activating or deactivating auto walk.

Enabling auto walk

1. Press the key you use to walk forward with (mine, like many other players is the W key)
2. While holding down the walk key, press the overlay key to bring up the Steam in-game overlay
3. After the overlay is activated, release the walk key
4. Now press the overlay key again to deactivate the overlay
5. Volia! Now you have enabled auto-walk

With it enabled, you can press the sprint key, crouch key, crawl key, etc. and it will still automatically walk in the direction you aim your mouse at. This is much easier on your W key! Sometimes if you press the walk forward key again, it will disable it. So just keep in mind to not press the W key after you've enabled auto walk.

Disabling auto walk

1. Press and hold the walk key
2. Press the overlay key to activate the overlay
3. Press the overlay key to deactivate the overlay
4. Release the walk key
5. Now you should be back to manual walking mode!

@Dan/Pepper Yeah. I was annoyed too when I shift+tab to reply to chat while playing, it always messes up the game and makes me move uncontrollably forward.

I considered "autorunning" an annoying glitch that resulted from shift+tab and the game not handling pausing/input switching correctly, I do appreciate finding the way to stop it easily. I used to flail about with shift+tab and trying to stop myself from running around non-stop.

It deffinately works with running, because sometime I'll be holding forward and shift and then keep holding forward, shift tab to talk to friend and come back and then I'm running non-stop. Good job finding a use for what I'd honestly consider an input glitch, and double kudos for figuring out easy steps to turn it back off.

@Dan/Pepper In most of the main missions and free roam doing side ops, holding down the walk button for more than 30 seconds ins inevitable when you're required to travel from one point to another and when exfiltrating the hotzone so I use the auto-walk to be as efficient on my W key as possible.

meh. part of the fun of the game is placing yourself in risky situations. box delivery is worth it imo, and the easiest way to do it is if you do get spotted, run away, then sneak back in to get to the platform, or capture the base first. I pretty much always capture outposts/bases/grab plants/etc whenever its on the way

@Dan/Pepper yeah the box delivery is great once you obtained all the invoices. But a tad risky since enemies spawn all beside you and deliveries are cancelled when enemies go on moderate alert level or higher.

Return to ACC IS a preferable option to calling in a heli for pickup if you're trying to do missions in the other region or return to mb, but getting across the map fast is cheap and easy with box. just set the box down on an orange platform at a enemy base. hold e when prompt appears, and they'll ship you to any other base you've collected the shipping label (found on the orange platform's sign) for. fast and free.

@Daniel/Patrick. Deploying does cost GMP tho. it costs at a minimum the helicopter's current equipment GMP cost. it doesnt alert you, but it does take away resources (1000gmp is the minimum if you dont use any heli upgrades) I've tested it, and viola, even though it doesnt alert you, when you deploy from acc, even if already over the area of operations you're going to, it takes away the gmp cost. return to ACC doesn't, but it's not worth it imo. even heading back to motherbase from ACC costs the gmp.

@Daniel In that case I always return to ACC and redeploy. I use this auto walk trick for any travel on foot or vehichle that requires moving forward for more than 100m. I like to conserve my W key because every game I play needs it. I don't know about you but usually when I exfiltrate the hotzone I find it more convenient by to auto walk instead of holding it for a good 2-3mins.
