I made them myself using gimp and blender.

Try them in the character creator before you edit saved in game characters to be sure.

Dunno if you have seen this, but Id recommend taking a look at this reddit thread that shows how to get rid of unecessary files in XCOM 2 mods that only make it harder to load:

I'm guessing the modshadercache.upk is present. Since you're not making any new models, I think that file isn't needed.
