How it's done
go to the main menu > Editor > any map > place down a unit > preview > press Escape, then copy paste this into the Local Execute

myNum = 2; myNumNew = setSystemOfUnits myNum;

this will change your unit of measurement from metric to Imperial,

if you want to see just metric again put this

myNum = 0; myNumNew = setSystemOfUnits myNum;

this will automatically go back to normal if you close your game.

Only problem I myself am having is getting into the preview itself. I've been playing Arma for a year and it does bug me that they don't already have an option to just switch it. But, yeah life story ended.
The main problem at hand - how would one get to such a setting? Very little detail how unless there is like an obvious way but my brain is slow and so forth.

it will still read KM, arma is dumb. but i assure you it is in knots. best way is to get in a ghost hawk and read the Air speed. that should match up correctly.

Hmm, thanks for the reply. Odd though, for me the "KM" distance remained. I'll try it again though. Maybe it was the mod (Warlords) that messed with something.
