Windows 8 Crash Fix - dmsynth.dll problem

This guide explains how to fix the crash to desktop when intercepting UFOs in the game globe map.

Problem:
Game crashes when intercepting UFOs in the globe map.
It has to do with the volume of the 3D sound effects handled by the DirectMusic Software Synthesizer (dmsynth.dll).

Solution #1: Replace current dmsynth.dll version with the older version that comes with the game (4.9.0.900) .
Solution #2: Reduce the game sound volume to 75% or less.

We will replace the DirectMusic Software Synthesizer library file (dmsynth.dll) with an older version (4.9.0.900)

Go to "Steam\steamapps\common\UFO Extraterrestrials Gold\DirectX9"
With an extraction tool, open the file "DirectX.cab" and extract the file "dmsynth.dll"

dmsynth.dll - - - version 4.9.0.900
Go to "C:\Windows\System32" and backup/rename the file "dmsynth.dll" (v6.3.9600.17415). To do this you will need to change the file ownership and change it's permissions to have full control.
Replace it with the older version from step 2.

UPDATE: As an alternative to this file replacement try to reduce the game Sound Volume to 75% or less. By default it comes set at 100% and keeping it like that will result in the game crashing.

I have the solution, if you have a x64 windows, you must put the file in C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64 too, and it works ! :)

Win 8.1 here, crashing all the time. Your technique did not work, however, I have found that completely turning off in game sound reduces the amount of crashing from a million times an hour to... once to twice a week. A real life week. It makes the game a bit more boring, but it's better than crashing to everything. You can still keep the music on, but sound has to be turned down to 0%.

where is this dmsynth file isnt even in the direct 9 folder

also tried placing in to compatabilty mode, windows xp mode, still crashing

preformed this configuration adjustment. game is still crashing. also step 2 is actually "c:program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\ufo extraterrestials gold\directx9"
