How to Fix Dark Souls on PC (includes keyboard/mouse fixes)
由 WaywardPooch 制作
[UPDATE] Hello 2020! With the release of Dark Souls Remastered, I no longer play on the older release of this game, and therefore do not know if this guide will still function (it should, though; no updates have been administered in recent years to my knowledge). You are welcome to try it, but if something goes wrong, it'll be hard for me to help. Apologies for the inconvenience.

--------------------------------------------------

Dark Souls is an amazing game, with no doubt. On consoles, it is superb, but on PC... well, it looks almost as if the devs tried to do a speedrun when porting it. I have made this guide to help all those who are experiencing trouble trying to get the game to function the way it should have functioned out of the box.

It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you play this game with a controller/gamepad if you have one handy: there is a reason it says so on the store page. However, for those of you who don't have one (or would prefer to play the game with mouse and keyboard) I have not left you in the dark. :)

1. Install DSfix
DSfix is THE MOST ESSENTIAL MOD. If it is not installed (correctly), you will not be able to use any of the other mods listed.
______________________________________________________________________________

Download DSfix from here (Durante's website is down as of writing this, so I'll instead point to his upload at the Dark Souls Nexus):
DSfix 2.4 at NexusMods[www.nexusmods.com]

Install it by unzipping its contents into the Dark Souls DATA directory, usually located at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA

This optimizes Dark Souls by eliminating many crashes, and allowing you to increase the resolution to whatever your monitor can handle. It also allows you to install other mods.
2. Install Morten242's DSfix UI
Download Morten242’s DSfix UI from here:
Morten242's UI for DSfix[www.nexusmods.com]

Install it the same way you install DSfix. Upon installation, you will be prompted to disable in game anti-aliasing. Click on yes/ok.

This helps you tweak DSfix easily, without the need to open a text editor to edit cfg files. I recommend you open the mod’s exe to set your resolution, set up an autosave system, and go borderless fullscreen.
3. [OPTIONAL] Install High-Resolution Fonts
Steps 3 and 4 are not necessary, but will make dark souls more enjoyable, clear, and user friendly. The mod in step 3 works for both controller and keyboard and mouse users alike, but step 4 is for keyboard and mouse ONLY and will confuse you if you play with a controller. If you want to complete these steps, you MUST enable texture override in Morten242’s DSfix UI.
____________________________________________________________________________

Download the High-Res Fonts pack from here:
High-Res UI and Subtitle fonts[www.nexusmods.com]

Install it by unzipping its contents into the texture override folder, typically located at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA\dsfix\tex_override

This will increase the resolution of the fonts in-game and in the menus, to make everything easier to read. Not necessary, but helpful.
4. [KB/M Users] Install Keyboard Interface Icons
4) (SKIP THIS STEP IF USING A CONTROLLER)
Download the modern keyboard interface icon pack from here:
Modern keyboard interface icons[www.nexusmods.com]

Install it the same way you install the High-Res Font Pack.

This replaces all of the Xbox controller icons with keyboard/mouse icons. You may need to remap which keys do what as the icons are mapped to specific actions. Get the correct icon pack (original or alternative) depending on personal preference. The Q/E keys will be swapped according to which one you choose.
5. [KB/M Users] Install DSMfix
[UPDATE] NOT ALL HARDWARE IS SUPPORTED, AND REGARDLESS, THE LINK FROM THE ORIGINAL CREATOR IS NOW MISSING. There is a link to a Google Drive mirror by somebody in the comments of the linked reddit post below, but I cannot attest to its safety or function.

--------------------------------------------------

The mod in step 5 is most crucial to install if you are using mouse and keyboard. If you are NOT using a mouse and keyboard, DO NOT INSTALL IT, as it WILL DISABLE YOUR GAMEPAD.
______________________________________________________________________________

5) Install the Unofficial Dark Souls Mouse Fix (DSMfix) from here:
Patched DSMfix For Steamworks Edition

Install it the same way you install DSfix.

This mod fixes the “earthquake camera” when using a mouse, and makes it smooth to adjust your view in game when using a mouse and keyboard setup.
Closing Remarks
And there you have it! Hopefully after completing the steps listed, you are now able to play Dark Souls the way it's meant to be played, no matter what display or control scheme you choose!

In short, after reading in the comments what a hell modding this game is, I realized that there is no hope of setting anything up properly anyway. So I'll delete it from sight and forget about it...

@Nevo: Just fixed the link; used to point directly to Durante's blog, but it looks like the website isn't there anymore. I've replaced the link with one pointing to his NexusMods page.

I have the retail version and DSFIX 2.4 crashes the game every minute or so. Using an older version fixed it though. (not sure which version as it was downloaded years ago)

@Loke: All of the links are working on my end. I'm not sure what you mean by "remap."

@Rainy: If the game is crashing, make sure you DISABLE in-game anti-aliasing. If you did and it's still crashing, try reinstalling DSfix after validating your game files, and only apply graphic effects (like AO, AA, etc.) one by one to see what's triggering the crash, then avoid using that effect.

@decius.brutus: Be sure to NOT install DSMfix if you want to use a controller. The mod WILL DISABLE controller support. If you didn't install DSMfix and still have the problem, I'd try using Steam Big Picture and let steam emulate Xbox controller input if you're not using one.

Any way to make it recognize a controller?
