PDW is more of an idea about size in general, and how you issue/the intended purpose of the firearm. PDWs were a big idea before the Berlin Wall fell, the main concern being heavily armed Soviets. The small package and armor piercing capabilities were the focus then, the threat being primarily Soviet. PDW actually retrospectively applies to other firearms throughout history, however. The American M1 and M2 Carbines are PDWs. The original Czech Scorpion. Typically not full “service rifle”(by each era’s standards [M1 Carbine much smaller than M1 Garand.) size, and/or not utilizing bigger/service rifle cartridges. The term itself really focuses on the role, however. You can have rifle caliber and pistol caliber PDWs, the FN P90 and HK MP7 were really just trying to make smaller pistol-like cartridges perform like rifle cartridges. (Note: The FN 5.7 and the HK 4.6 were both spitzer style projectiles, like rifle cartridges of then and now. [Spitzer means pointy bullet tip.])

@Rockbuddy9 PDW is an abbreviation for Personal Defence Weapon, which is a classification regarding gun law in US. It does not change the fact that MP7 is obviously a sub-machinegun. Obviously, you do not own a gun or live in US. Don't go around correcting people with second-hand knowledge without context. I thought Canadians were better than this. Tabernac!
