Introducing Day Number 04, the ’Sentinel’ - Rogue Security Drone

“It’s been two winters since they came. Our world was previously under the governance of the LEC trading alliance; we sold our way out of poverty, trading our labor for sanctuary in remote colonies on the surface of a barren heat-waste. The agreement had always been that we worked for them in their mines, and they provided us with shelter, and though demand was rising, we always thought their terms acceptable; but something changed.

Instead of being greeted by the trade ambassador, we were now met by armed drones, demanding the ores, as well as an additional toll for ‘protection’. One fee turned to a dozen; each with their own arbitrary justifications. It’s not like we could protest - on the contrary, some even defended it, demanding we cast out freeloaders unwilling to pull their weight. Many froze as a result, increasing the strain of our ever-present quota.

We’ve been unable to afford their ransom for cycles now, but we’ve gotten by as a community. The wealthier provided the shares of those willing to work; knowing they could not lose any more hands; but they too are beginning to feel the strain. It’s been two winters since they came, and unless something changes, we won’t survive another.”
