I mean yeah the vanilla sprite is weird but at least it could actually pull you up the rope (if it's some magic-powered machine or something; It's got teeth.). An actual pulley needs the rope to thread through and bend around, and the rope would travel with you, so doesn't make sense on a straight rope.

That's probably why they went with the weird sprite.
