Lightweight weapons
Liam is able to perform a kick with light weapons such as the early smg, handgun, flare gun, etc. Today we will be using Liam's kick to save you ammo as early as getting out of the hotel at the start of the game.
(Video link included) How to perform the gun, kick, knife mechanic. (PC tested only)
NOTE THIS GUIDE HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED WITH PC AND NOT ON CONTROLLER. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WORKS ON CONTROLLER!

1. The first step is simple point your gun at the enemy and ready your "kick button." Remember if you dont like the angle the camera is giving you change it up so you can see the zombie better.

2. Give that zombie the good old boot.

3. THIS PART IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE SINCE IT MUST BE DONE QUICKLY FOLLOWED BY THE NEXT FEW STEPS!

4. While kicking the zombie hold your "moving forward button" (PC's case for example the W key). As you are holding your W key while having kicked the zombie first spam your inventory button. To be effective this is how it should go.

Kick zombie while holding the W key (or whatever it is on your controller making your character move towards the zombie) and spam the inventory key/button during the kick and moving forward button. If done right you should be relatively "physically touching" the zombie in front if not very close to him as its starting its stumble backwards animation as shown below while your inventory screen is coming up.

IMPORTANT NOTE! The Liam's right foot should always be touching if not close to the zombies own feet/body by the time his inventory menu pulls up as shown in the picture below for this mechanic to work!

5. While in the inventory switch to the combat knife.

6.THE NEXT STEPS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND MUST BE DONE IN A FAST MANNER!

7. While the combat knife in your inventory is now selected and equipped you must do the following action within a frame or two or the knife will not hit the zombie.

First you need to tap the inventory menu however while tapping the inventory menu immediately after taping it tap your "aim down sights button." As if you were aiming the gun and your fire button.

Inventory---> combat knife---> press inventory and within a split second of pressing the inventory button press the aim and fire button rapidly to do a knife swing as shown below.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU HAVE HIT OR NOT HIT THE ZOMBIE BACK AWAY! One knife swing is enough and this method guarantees you at least one hit on the zombie before it recovers from the stun animation.

8. DO NOT GET GREEDY! Most likely if you get your one swing in the zombie will still stumble away and if your try to run up to him and knife him again he will most likely give you a love bite as if you are going for a second swing by that time he will have recovered.

9. After your knife has either hit or not hit the enemy back it up and reequip the handgun.

10. Repeat all steps until the zombie is dead!

Video below on how to do it.

Downsides to this mechanic.
Several factors can prevent you from doing this mechanic right.

If you kick a zombie into a wall for instance its possible the zombie may recover from the stun way faster and may end up biting you. The best way to do this is in an open room or kicking the zombie away from any walls so you have more stun time.

Its also possible that when you knife a zombie he recovers instantly and may try to grab you. It hasn't happened to me always but enough times i have noticed it hence why i said after you knife the zombie or if you miss the knife hitting him back up and don't get greedy.

MOST IMPORTANT DOWNSIDE If for example you are in a room with 2 to 3 zombies or more it is most likely this mechanic will fail you as this is designed for a 1 V 1 fight not multiple. However if you can separate the zombies and lure them to you 1 by 1 you might have a chance if you have enough room that they only see you 1 by 1.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT DOWNSIDE! Sometimes normal zombies after being hit too many times turn into fast zombies instantly. It doesn't always happen but be wary of it just in case it happens to the zombie you are knifing. They generally turn into a fast zombie instantly (when they feel like it no other way to explain it but not always) and just like i said before they come out of the stun animation instantly and start to run after you. Just make sure you always back up after the first swing of your knife after the kick and then equip your gun when its safe and kick them again and repeat the process till they are dead.

Another downside is the fact that this takes longer to kill a zombie than with any other weapon but it saves you so much ammunition in the long run.

It will take practice to get this mechanic down pat but in the end it is well worth the extra ammo.
Positives of this mechanic
Not only if you use this mechanic through the entire game does it save you a boat load of ammo from start to finish it now helps you defeat groups of zombies.

What i mean by that is now that zombies "keep the damage done to them" when you enter or exit a room you can theoretically enter a room with multiple zombies lure the closest one to you and knife them one or 2 times and reload the room so you don't get bit if they are all coming for you. That zombie will then still have the same damage done to it and you can take each zombie out in the room who comes closest to you then exit through the door you came in the room with when the zombies come too close.

If you use this strategy from the start the only time you should not use it is with multiple enemies who are too close in an enclosed space near the door you entered the room in. In that scenario i would say use a bat, or metal pipe, the morning star or whatever melee weapon that isn't the knife to take them out easy to save you even more ammo.

In the end doing it this way you shouldn't need to fire that much except for cockroaches, dogs, maybe fast zombies if your uncomfortable doing this mechanic on them, the seekers (fast clawed licker like enemies) bloater like enemies, getting rid off the virus in white clumps on the ground and etc.
What enemies are worth using the mechanic on?
Regular zombies at the start of the game take around 4 to 5 knife hits. Later on in the game they sometimes take more.

Fast normal zombies can still be killed using this mechanic however after immediately swinging your knife back up a few paces before equipping your gun and doing the whole thing over again.

Armored Zombies = generally not worth it as they are most likely in groups. Use a d. eagle or shot gun on their head and blast them away or use melee weapons like the bat, metal pipe with a downward swing to knock their hats off and kill them again with your melee weapon. (The axe on downward swing will one shot them.)

Fast Licker like enemy = .... Just don't try it it wont end well.

Cockroaches = Not applicable as using the knife on them is too hard and you would take too many hits from them since they hit fast.

Birds = You can just knife them regularly using this mechanic cant stun them though trying to just knife them just right might get you hit.

Dogs = too fast to even knife regularly.

Louis Pendantel boss segments = too fast to knife regularly generally will end in you being stunlocked into a wall.

Spider boss = poison fun for the whole family and stunlock to death

Regular Spiders/ baby spiders = may hit or poison you

Hazmat zombies take around 10 - 12 knife hits with this mechanic.

Firefighters 10 - 12 knife hits

(extra mentions will be updated in time when reaching said points)
Summary
Overall this mechanic is used for 1 on 1 fights. This can save you handgun or shotgun or any type of ammunition for those hard boss fights.

I hope this helps you all save a bit more ammo.

It is what it is. Just a mechanic in case you miss too many of your shots for some reason or find yourself in low ammo situations for some reason. Doesn't hurt to know or for the folks who want to try a knife run for fun its a safe way to knife zombies to death without getting grabbed 90% of the time.

It's a nice mechanic usage but...it is completely useless in the game cause you have MORE than enough ammo to do what you want in the game..you can rambo the whole game out without ever having real problems of ammo. Obviously if you shoot the air that's different but...you should not shoot the air.

Sounds like a pain to do but useful once you get it down lol. I probably wouldn't have the patience to do that 110 swings.

Pendatal's got 2 forms that can be knifed. Just get behind him after he does a long lunge and knife away. He doesn't turn around quickly. Takes about 110 swings.
