Greyback Class Submarine

描述
### **New Release: The Greyback-Class Strategic Missile Submarine**

Unleash the dawn of the submarine-launched missile era with the arrival of the Greyback-class submarine. This meticulously crafted mod brings a pivotal piece of Cold War history to your command, introducing a unique strategic platform and its revolutionary weaponry.

***
**A Note Before Diving In:**
Both **Sea Lifter** and **Anchor Chain** must be properly installed for this mod to function.
***

The USS Greyback (SSG-574) and her sister ship were born from a radical concept: to take the nuclear deterrent seaward, hidden beneath the waves. Commissioned in the late 1950s, these diesel-electric submarines were the first in the U.S. Navy designed from the keel up to carry and launch guided cruise missiles. Their most prominent feature was a pair of massive cylindrical hangars forward of the sail, housing the subsonic Regulus I cruise missile. This pioneering design meant the submarine had to surface to unleash its devastating payload, creating a tense and vulnerable moment of strategic importance that defined a generation of naval warfare.

This mod delivers a comprehensive and immersive experience, focusing on the unique operational challenges and groundbreaking technology of the Greyback-class:

**Custom Guided-Missile Submarine Model:**
Experience a detailed, custom-built model of the Greyback-class submarine. From its unique twin-hangar bow configuration to the intricate details of its surfaced-launch apparatus, every aspect of this historic submarine has been faithfully recreated for Sea Power.

**A New Dimension of Naval Armament:**

* **Regulus I Cruise Missile:** Take command of the U.S. Navy's first operational nuclear-capable cruise missile. With a range of 500 nautical miles, you must bring the Greyback to the surface, align the launcher, and fire this subsonic weapon, all while exposed to enemy detection—a true high-risk, high-reward strategic asset.

* **Regulus II Cruise Missile:** This mod also includes the supersonic successor to the Regulus I. Capable of reaching Mach 2, the Regulus II offered a significant leap in speed and range. Although its service life was brief before the advent of ballistic missiles, you can now deploy this advanced weapon from the only submarine to ever successfully launch it: the USS Grayback.

* **Custom Modeled Type 16 Torpedo:** Protect your strategic asset with a custom-modeled Mark 16 torpedo. A post-WWII powerhouse, this torpedo was the standard anti-shipping weapon for the U.S. Navy for two decades. It was renowned for its powerful Torpex warhead, making it one of the most destructive conventional submarine torpedoes in the world at the time.

* **Mk37 Torpedo: An advanced, electrically propelled, passive/active acoustic homing torpedo. The Mk37 was a dedicated anti-submarine weapon, representing the crucial shift in submarine doctrine towards hunter-killer roles. Please note, this weapon uses a base game asset and is not a custom model.

**NOTE:** Both the Regulus I and Regulus II are conventionally armed as of right now, due to the lack of properly functioning nuclear weapons in the game at this time.

**Employing the Regulus Missile System:**
In-game, the Regulus missile has no internal guidance system. Its primary role is land attack, and it must be guided manually by the submarine all the way to the target. If the communication link is lost (for example, if the submarine is forced to dive), the missile will lose all guidance.

You can attempt to target surface vessels by flying the missile to the target with submarine guidance, but this is challenging and does not work very well, reflecting the limitations of the real-world system. Targeting ships in this manner would, as far as I know, not have been historically accurate.

**A Note on Performance and Visuals:**
To ensure the best possible performance across a wide range of systems, this mod is released with default textures at a lower resolution than what is shown in the screenshots. For those with capable systems, I have also included the high-resolution textures. To install them, simply extract the contents of the `highrestextures.zip` file to the base mod directory, which will overwrite the lower-resolution textures. This allows you to choose between optimal performance and maximum fidelity.

Thank you for exploring this new addition to Sea Power. I hope you enjoy the unique strategic challenge of commanding this remarkable piece of naval innovation!

**Future Development & Support:**
As always, I have plans for future updates and refinements as time permits.

My availability for troubleshooting is often limited due to real-world commitments. I will provide support when I can, but there may be periods where I am unable to respond promptly. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.

Anyone have a scenario/campaign using these?

Hey everyone, planning several mod updates this weekend!

Greyback Collision: Fixed the broken collision model.

Prerequisites Removed: Removed Anchor Chain/Sea Lifter requirements. This should fix some loading issues!

Nuclear Weapons Research: Exploring nuclear versions of the Regulus I & II, as I believe nuclear explosions are now feasible! (Conventional Regulus I remains.)

Regulus II Guidance: Looking for a better solution for the guidance system.

Compatibility: Updating mod version to the latest game release.

[24-11-2025 21:24:39.991] [General] ERROR: Could not load GameObject for resource 'ships/usn_ss_Greyback/usn_ss_Greyback.obj' in ResourceLoader.cs: getGameObjectResource (line 151) The above message appears in the log, then the app crashes. What should the author do?

Assuming functional nukes arrive, would you make separate conventional and nuclear versions? I want to use these in a campaign I'm working on, and the force you'd play as definitely wouldn't be able to get their hands on nuclear weapons.

The targeting for the Regulus II missile seems to be broken. I select a specific target and the missile flies past it before crashing down far away.

What a majestic thing.

anyone know why it crashes on startup?

To address a few comments:

For those looking for other subs, the Type XXI is nearly complete! It just needs a little more testing on its new torpedoes and sensor systems. Following that, the experimental Sea Shadow vessel is nearing model completion and will likely be the next release, with other projects also underway.

For **markus657**: The "mod" folder is the one created when you subscribe via the Steam Workshop. Its path depends on where your Steam library is installed. For example: `C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1286220\3598689444\`

Inside this mod folder is a `highrestextures.7zip` file. For the higher-res textures, just extract that .7zip file to the root of this folder and overwrite the existing files when you are prompted. While I can't guarantee performance on all machines, they have worked well on my test machines.

Thanks again for all the support

Thank you all so much for the kind words! I'm really glad to hear that everyone is enjoying the mod. It was a lot of fun to research and put together; I think I may have more fun making mods than I do actually playing the game lol.
