Carrying, hauling, and storage guide
由 deadspawn 制作
This is a guide on backpacks, storing items in your base, and moving items to your base. All information comes from the experimental demo prior to release. All weights are listed in pounds, but your game will allow you to use either the metric or the imperial system.

Backpacks
Here are the packs available in the experimental demo prior to release.
  • 1. School backpack -50 pounds – found throughout the game

  • 2. Gym Bag -75 pounds – found throughout the game, but easier to find in schools

  • 3. Combat pack – 150 pounds – found on dead soldier zeds

  • 4. Hiking Backpack -100 pounds – found at the cavern in the demo and Rural Dollar in EA

I need to add the following two pieces of information after reading a lot of discord questions from new players.

You can lock items in your backpack and make things your favorite. To the right side of the item will be two things, one is a favorite which will always keep it at the top of the inventory list (little star or asterisk).

and the second is a lock ability. Just click on it to lock it.

The second piece of information is how do you tell what your character is wearing by looking into your inventory. Looking at the above picture you will see some squares to the left of the items. Those items are being worn. Alternatively, you can also look at your equipped gear by hitting the "I" button and look at equipment.
Vehicles
Vehicles – you got your junk, now get it to your base

What is the best vehicle to get?

Well, that depends on what vehicles you find, which ones are functional, and what your play style is. Each vehicle class has a trunk weight rating or capacity. I am listing the basic ones from the demo. All the glove boxes are 50 pounds. Some are faster and more maneuverable; some haul a ton of stuff.

  • Motorcycle, Bus, and tractor have no storage but some have glove boxes

  • Cars, campers/RV, sports cars and UTV’s (from the family car to the police cruiser) – 300 pounds - the storage compartment for the RV.Camper is inside and is a cabinet. The sports car's truck is in the front.

  • Pickups and the ambulance – 500 pounds

  • SUV -700 pounds

  • Vans – 1000 pounds

  • Delivery trucks -1200 pounds - Has storage inside the vehicle (shelves)

  • Box truck -3000 pounds - the biggest (inside storage)

The problem with the larger vehicles like the trucks is that you cannot just dump the stuff inside of it, you must go into it. Whereas a car/van/pickup, you can just dump it in there from outside the vehicle. It might seem trivial, until you really start hauling stuff around. Also, when you get in and out of a vehicle, you are disarmed. You must reequip your weapon before you get out, or that zed runner that is slapping your window is going to smack you a few times, maybe even bite you.

Personally, I like the van. It is best in class in the demo for moving items and having some speed and maneuverability. If I am just going to loot a crate or two and don’t need the space, I like the police car. The police car is fast, and it is fun to ride around with the lights and siren blaring pulling zeds in just to run them over. The fastest vehicle, other than the motorcycle, is the sports car.

    Getting it in there
My .02 is if you don’t really need or want an item, dismantle it first, then dump it in the trunk of the vehicle. Sure, you will need a lot of the beginner mats early, but sometimes you might want to prioritize things. Raw limestone, car parts, and other items are very heavy and you want that in the vehicle. Being encumbered when there are a lot of zeds makes you slow. Don’t haul around parcels, first aid kits and such, unpack or open them first to reduce weight.

Putting stuff in your vehicle more quickly – If you have locked your items that you want to keep in your inventory, this is simple. Click on the tab - let's pick the blue clothing tab. Everything I want to keep on me is locked. So, when I hit the "J" key only the Items I want to be placed there transfer.

It is the same thing for removing, however, if your vehicle carries 1200 pounds of stuff you cannot carry all of that. Go tab by tab and select H take all of that kind of item (blue, yellow, purple etc). Haul it into your base and pack it away.
Moving bigger items
This is fun, at least it was in the demo. If you can move it, you can get it back to your base. What everyone does is move it a little at a time until you can place it on a car or truck. Then drive it back to your base and slowly move it bit by bit into your base, or on the roof, or wherever you want. Solar panels, animal mounts, microwaves, drink machines, refrigerators, totes, you want it, take it. Be careful with the larger trucks, in the demo they did not work well hauling the larger items. Everything happened from the item breaking to vehicle issues (flying off). I moved a lot of stuff with the police car, it seemed more stable. Also, do not hit zeds with the car when stuff is placed on it. In the demo the physics were sometimes a little wonky. Who knows where you, the item, or your car will end up. Or…..tell your buddy to punch it and hit that zed in the road, after they spent 10 minutes trying to move something on top of a vehicle to get it back to the base. I have already broke two refrigerators in the EA trying to move them to my base by hitting a zombie once and hitting a bump in the road.

Getting it onto the roof or wherever the force takes you.

In the demo you had to use either a large vehicle or build items next to your house first. Then you would slowly move the item from the vehicle to the other objects until you got it onto the roof. The developer said that they were going to increase the move distance, and they have. It is now so much easier to move items further distances. Gone are the move it bit by bit until it is close enough tot the car to get it on the roof. The weight of the item limits how far you can move it, and it does cause exhaustion if you push it. It can also cause soreness. It also makes you tired.

Examples of hauling items on a vehicle:

Why would I take that junk?

Well, the power does shut off eventually in the game so maybe you want solar panels without crafting them. Maybe you want to take the farming tables instead of crafting them. Save your materials for fortifications. The water shuts off too, and then it gets cold (placed in New York state).

Or, I don’t know, maybe you want a cool place to sit in the rocket ship while watching the sunset from your roof. Maybe your character is drinking some wine or whiskey, smoking a fatty, or reading a comic book. It’s your game, play it your way.

Storing stuff inside your hut.
There are craftable storage boxes and shelves, game rendered objects that can be moved and used, and of course the walls and floor can be used. Some houses/buildings already have furniture or items in them you can use until you have enough materials to build your hoarding empire. I like the trash can. In the demo it was cheap to make and held a lot of stuff. This is by far the cheapest craftable mass storage item in the game (pre release).
  • In the demo you could dump stuff on the ground and it would not disappear.

  • Placing items is pretty straight forward. Grab the item and place it. Somethings cannot be put on walls, only flat surfaces. Let your interior decorator run wild.

  • Storage containers (label them if you like) Just hit the “B” button and go to storage and craft them

  • Small crate -150 pounds

  • Large crate - 300 pounds - captial letters work best for labeling them

  • Material bin 500 lbs - only scrap

  • Crafted trash can 440 pounds - takes everything and large amounts

  • In game trash bin -75 pounds

  • Storage tote 35 pounds – just empty them first and move them from a shed onto a car and haul to your base. I don't like them, but some people do. They can be labeled.

Work stations
Each work station has internal storage, but keep in mind you must also store tools in there to do the work. As the workbench progresses (higher levels) the storage capacity increases.
Workbench 150 lbs
Advanced workbench 200 lbs
Fabrication workbench 300 lbs

Even the Utility Cabinet (UC) has a storage capacity. Depending on the size of your base and what you have built there, will determine the rate of use. Multiple UC’s can chew through a lot of materials if you have decay enabled in your settings.

Water storage
  • The largest craftable water storage is the fluid barrel – 6,661 fl ounces. Of course the rain collector is larger, as it is basically 3 barrels.

  • Probably the most useful is the Large water jug, which cannot be crafted -

[*} EA - new keg rules the fluid transfer game, it is huge, found at bars, some houses (technically a gas tank is a better option to use for mass fluid transfer, as it's capacity is larger)

  • There are lots of other items varying in sizes, E.G. plastic buckets, muck tubs, bottles, large botttles. Just fill them up before the water shuts off and place them anywhere. I use the areas by sinks, just so I can fill them up faster and place them. Then transfer the water to a drum.

  • mass fluid storage ideas - its a sandbox game so do whatever

Use the keg to fill plastic drums by the sink and then move them and stack them on one another.

Or, you can take the keg in your trunk to the gas station, then transfer gas from the gas pumps into a fluid barrel. You can then put the barrel on the roof of your vehicle and drive it back to your base.

Food storage – refrigeration
  • Best one in the game – 250 pounds -can be found at bars and taverns – steel fridge – (not movable in .022 or .023 experimental versions but dev said he might make it movable).

  • Regular fridge - 125

There is a craftable fridge and freezer you can make, using the "B" button, but if you create electricity and hook it to the fuse panel, I think it is best to use the in-game ones. The houses have the smaller refrigerator, and there are mini coolers/refrigerators in the stores you can move to your base. There are also little coolers and even lunch boxes. You can store food anywhere, but most of it will go bad. I don’t know why canned goods go bad so quickly, ask the devs.
Helpful tip
Just one more helpful tip, fighting the horde solo with fists isn’t the best idea. Maybe if you up armor (combat helmet, combat vest, knee pads, clothing with more damage resists, etc) ahead of time it is easier, but I was running light when this one happened. The death penalty isn’t too bad, sometimes there isn’t a penalty at all, just time to reequip and rearm and kill your zombie self. When you hear the horde scream, run to your car as fast as you can. If your loaded with stuff (encumbered or god forbid sick), well, you will be slow, almost at a crawl.

VEIN thoughts
I don’t know the devs, just two guys working on this game for a couple of years. Is it perfect, nope. Is it fun solo or in a group, I think so. I’m giving these two guys (yes, just 2 people) all the credit in the world. They have been responsive, updated the game, took suggestions, provided feedback, and fixed bugs all the time. It has been out for a while in demo, for free. I played it, shelved it, they updated it, and I played it again. Then they added the experimental recently. If you need help join the discord, lots of helpful people there. Well, there was before the release, who knows which way it will go after release. If you have played a lot of EA games there are the groups before release, basically bug testing and giving input, then all the post EA people. I’m not some major contributor on discord, just some rando with an occasional thought. I find it fun, maybe you will too.

Warning: If you like to hoard, build many bases or a huge base. If you allow the world items to re-spawn, you can hoard indefinitely. That will make some people very happy.

Now download the game and go out there and make a difference!

1- there was one inside the prison, one down in saranac at the car dealership, and one out by the streamer house werreanth I think it is called. The lake west of dannemora, drive down that road. I don't know if the spawns are random or not.

2-You don't coonect the rain collector to your interior plumbing. There is no plumbing hookup yet.

3 - You connect the solar to the battery box, not the batter charger, then you connect the fuse panel and the battery box. Fuse panel should have it listed as an incoming connection otherwise it isn't connected properly.

Amazing, but can u help me, please?

1- Where u found the sport car?

2- How connect liquid pipes?
How i connect the rain collector/well to my house (e.g. sinks, bath tubes, Dishwashers) ?

3- I got many Solar panels on map, but i can't connect them to the power junction box (is this name right?, btw the box u connect all equips on the house and u can turn on and off).
What i missed, please?

Thanks!!!!

@Nutsack

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, the RV's and the big trucks are a little problematic. I like the van with it being lower it doesn't seem to break stuff as easily. But you can't pile as much on it as the big box truck or the RV. The boxes coming off or out of the RV and box truck is all over the discord.

Great guide. I had put a bunch of large storage boxes in an RV and it was fine for a while but when I went far away and came back to drive the RV, it left the boxes floating in the air. I really hope they fix this because having a kitted out RV is so awesome
