Night Terrors

描述
The wind shifts, cold and unnatural. Flames lash out against the dark as if resisting an unseen force. Then, silence. The world holds its breath. The night, heavy and oppressive, seems to deepen. Something stirs in the nearby darkness ... something ancient, something evil.

My motivation for this mod was to make Conan Exiles' nights feel dangerous, to add more unpredictable risk into my game, and to delve further into the lore from my other mods. Night Terrors is not for the faint of heart.

Features
  • Adds a random chance for encounters at night with demons, corrupted valkyries, and undead creatures. Encounters can happen for players level 10 and above, between dusk and dawn, and when outside of a base or land claimed area.

  • Introduces Corrupted Valkyries who, in their forsaken despair and endless torment, have been turned by the Pale Mother into deadly thralls wielding powerful hellforged and blighted weapons. If a player is lucky enough to subdue them, they can be converted on a wheel of pain.

  • Adds a rare chance of encountering unique named Corrupted Valkyries, Kinarra the Blight-Dancer (Fighter thrall) and Aleatha the Blight-Singer (Bladesmith thrall). Aleatha can craft unique hellforged and blighted weapons at a T2 or T3 smithing station.

  • More powerful denizens of the Pale Mother have a chance of dropping rare Sigils of Minevra when slain and can be harvested for demon bones and essences. If enough of these items are collected to prove worthiness, they can be used to summon Lesser Valkyrie thralls from an Exalted Altar of Ymir to aid in the fight.

  • Lesser valkyries, corrupted valkyries, and Kinarra the Blight-Dancer all have unique auras that provide buffs to the player befitting their nature. These buffs can stack with one another. Aleatha the Blight-Singer may intentionally suppress her aura, as she does not appear to offer one.

Note that this mod can add exceptional danger for players that dare to venture out at night. As players level, the encounters will gradually get more difficult. At player level 60+, the highest tiers of greater demons and undead unlock, and there is a chance, albeit a low one, to encounter world boss minions. Take care, and if you are playing on a server with this mod, consider building a wall around your base and taking precautions. Encounters won't trigger in a base with land claim, but other players might still flee there or otherwise find a way to put thralls in a base at risk.

Lore
Having found the portal through which Kianne the Blight-Weaver escaped, the Demon Queen Minevra has sent her army of hellish demons and forsaken souls into the realm of mortals to slay and feed on mankind.



Among the many tales and songs of her kind honoring valkyries, lost or taken by the hells, Alina the Fate-Sister shares a short verse dedicated to the beloved bladesmith Aleatha and the champion Kinarra.

Couple of quick notes:
  • The connection of the demons to the world is still tenuous. After about 5 real-time minutes, they will dissipate if still alive. If you happen to knockout a Corrupted Valkyrie - either Kinarra, Aleatha, or otherwise - you only have a short time to get them to a 'wheel of friendship'. Once on the wheel, they will remain in the world as a normal thrall.

  • In order to summon Lesser Valkyrie thralls from an Exalted Altar of Ymir (T3 altar), you must first learn the 0-point cost feat, Call of the Valkyrie, in the Ymir religion section of the knowledge menu.

  • (Admin console command) Use 'dc ambush disable DeviousMirth_NightTerrors' to disable ambushes, i.e., if you want to turn off the night terrors ambushes, but still keep your valkyrie thralls!

  • (Admin console command) Use 'dc ambush enable DeviousMirth_NightTerrors' to re-enable ambushes.

Mod Info: replaces no data, but adds to several tables with ID sequences 1013446XX.

If you uninstall this mod, hellforge and blighted weapons will disappear, demons will no longer wander in the night, and any corrupted or lesser valkyries will be gone from the game, likely having returned to whatever realm they came from.

Added a pinned post "Night Terrors Survival Guide" This can serve as a living document to make transparent the inner workings around the ambush system for Night Terrors. @Kelsenpai, this might be worth a look if you are still mulling over things for your server.

Hi @Kelsenpai, thanks for the great feedback and interest! All feedback is super helpful. This uses the "newer" ambush system implemented by Funcom. It works well enough for my gaming preferences, but there is still a thing or two I hope to change if I can. I thought the ambush enabled/disabled setting persists through restarts. Have you noticed different? I'll check it again. The ambushes can occur between 21:00 - 05:00 game time.

Hey again @Kvaketron, all good questions, during the night you are "safe" from the ambushes in your land claim (yep enough blocks to constitute a claim.. typically this is your base or someone else's base), but also safe in no-build zones like Sepermeru or Camp of the Castaways. Whether you build the base at night does not matter. Mobs may still follow you into those places though! As for weapons, yes I might add more in the future. Currently the only way to craft these is if you are lucky enough to find and tame Aleatha. You should find plenty though. I think dual weapons should work fine for thralls now. Lightning Gaming has a Youtube on that.. it was fixed some months back I think.

For server setup reasons, what ingame times count for when the ambushes can trigger?

Cool concept. I'm testing this out for a server. Slightly concerned with the lack of control over it. About 3 foundations away from a foundation enemies spawned, which is rather ridiculous. There is also no way to set the interval for checks, so it seems like the moment you step away you get attacked. Bit much.
I'm thinking of using this occasionally via turning it on when I want some event with it, but concerned that the default is enabled, so there is a good chance it will turn on after an update or server restart etc.

I also checked your modded weapons and realize there is no 1h maces or katanas among them. This my and my friend main weapon and it's very sad. Can you please add some in future updates?
Also did you know that thralls cant normal use double swords or double axes? I'm not complaining but i think modded weapons become useless before i even learn how to craft it (or obtain from boss)!

So get back to "dangerous night". Will the safe zone only appear if i put some blocks? I mean if we compare with sandstorm mechanic or using torch...maybe glowing powder for night vision? There are no other option except build blocks during night?

Hi @HANTER, indeed you can in the maelstrom. These night encounters work on any map I'm aware of and are always in effect at night, so its a similar mechanic, but of course there is more to it with the corrupted valkyries and such. I expect you can even get the benefit of both if you travel the maelstrom at night, if you want more chaos.

Hi @Kvaketron, great question & thanks for asking! If you wander the entire night, yes that can be typical. There is an 80% chance when it checks for encounters that one will occur, so there could be some variance. While bosses are possible in the encounters, they are not common, and only unlock at level 60+ The fights can take longer too at that level, so there can be fewer encounters overall. Again, this is all brought on by staying out in the dangerous night :steamhappy: The 80% chance may be a custom setting in the future, but at the moment its baked in.
