Introduction
If you like my work and want to support, you can read this same guide on my blog: https://www.soloplayguide.com/games/final-fantasy-ii-pixel-remaster/walkthrough

Characters
  • You'll start the game with 3 characters, they are the permanent members, while the 4th character changes over time as the game progresses until the very end where got your final member Leon.
  • So you shouldn't bother leveling up the 4th member until you have Leon joined the party.
Roles
  • All characters have similar stats providing flexibility. Basically, you can make anyone as a fighter, white mage, or black mage.
  • The most balanced roles would be "Fighter", "White Mage", and "Black Mage". Then, you can transition them to "Red Mage" over time. Again, don't bother with the 4th character until you have Leon. He can be any be class you like.
  • Another line up would be 3 "Red Mage", which I personally prefer. "Red Mage" is a combination of fighter and spell caster. However, this line up requires a lot of grinding to make them powerful. If you are planning to max out the stats, this is what you should go with.
Magic
  • You learn magic by giving a magic tome to a character.
  • You can level up the magic you learned by using it in the battle.
  • You can also use magic by using a magic tome as an item (during the battle, select "Item -> Fire Tome" for example). This is the quickest way to use high-level magic. When you learn magic, it starts at level 1, however, if you use a magic tome as an item, its effectiveness is at level 8. So, instead of leveling up your magic, you can buy many magic tomes to use them as items.
  • Most of the buff spells can stack, which means that you can cast multiple on the same target to increase their potency. Such as Berserk, Protect, Shell, Blink, Barrier, etc...
Leveling
Here is how leveling in this game works:
  • You gain HP by losing HP during the battle, either you receive damage from enemies or your party members.
  • You gain MP by losing MP during the battle, either using black or white magic.
  • You gain Strength and Stamina by attacking, either the enemies or your party.
  • You gain Intelligence and Spirit by using black and white magic.
  • You gain Agility and Evasion by getting hit and dodge attacks.
  • You gain a specific Skill Level by using a specific weapon type. For example, Sword skill can only be raised by using swords.
  • You gain Magic Defense by receiving magic attacks, either from enemies or your party members.
  • Defense can only be raised by wearing equipment.
Story
  • How you learn about the storyline in this game is almost optional. Most of the time, you can just skip the storyline and proceed to the next events without knowing why.
  • For this reason, I'll put a quick note "Optional Story" for your information. You can follow the note to read the actual dialogues.
ONE LAST THING:
  • ALWAYS SAVE YOUR GAME WITH QUICK-SAVE
  • Always level up your characters when you feel you cannot go any further.

01. Altair

Optional Story:
  • There are people in the top-left room where you can talk to learn more about the game mechanics.
  • The far-right room is the king chamber, you can talk to him to learn more about his situation.
Altair Town
I recommend you farm outside the town a little to increase your attack and HP.

Optional Story:
  • Talk to the guy wearing a purple cape in front of the hideout building and ask about "Wild Rose"; he'll give a unique dialogue.
  • Talk to the guy standing behind the hideout building, he'll tell you his name is Gordon, second prince of the Kashuan.
  • Feel free to talk to other town people.
02. Fynn
Gatrea Village (Optional)
It just happens that you'll come across this village. There is nothing to do in the village except that you can talk to the town people for more stories and shopping.

Town of Fynn
This town is crawling by monsters and imperial guards. Just be careful not to talk to any imperial guard, or you will initiate a fight with them which you cannot win.

03. Back to Altair
Recommendation: You should have enough money to buy the magic tomes "Fire Tome", "Blizzard Tome", "Thunder Tome", and "Cure Tome", 3 each, and give them to everyone.

Optional Story: Bring Scott's last message to his brother, Gordon, who is standing behind the Rebel's Hideout building. Talk to him and select "Key Items -> Ring".

Leveling Up (Optional but recommended)
Now that we have magic to use. Let's make them a bit stronger. This will also help you increase MP too.
  • Run around Altair to fight monsters.
  • In the battle, everyone chooses "Maigc -> Fire", while Minwu chooses "Defend" (press the right button to show "Defend command).
  • Repeat until "Fire" is level 2. Remember to use "Auto-battle" to speed up the battles.
  • Repeat the other 2 "Blizzard" and "Thunder".
  • Use the Inn to restore MP.
04. Paloom & Poft
Note 1:
  • These 2 towns have a ship that can transport you between towns. You can also walk between them without using the ship.
  • Using ship is quick, and you do not encounter any monsters, but it costs some money.
  • Every time you want to use the ship, you have to buy the ticket.
  • So it is up to you to use it or not. In this guide, I'll always use ship to travel to speed up the game.
Note 2:
  • In Poft, there is another transportation system by airship; it's a one-way travel. It costs more money than the ship but provides a quick way to travel to long-distance places.
Paloom
This town is optional. However, there are new equipment and magic available for sale.

IMPORTANT: buy "Cure Tome" for everyone as you'll heavily rely on "Cure" to heal everyone up later in the dungeons. You can be also other spells if you have money left.

Poft
The shops in Poft have exact same items as in Paloom.

05. Salamand

Optional Story:
  • Enter the house in the northwest (A) of the town and talk to the guy inside.
  • Choose "Ask -> Mythril", he'll ask you to rescue workers from Semitt Falls.
  • Optionally, you can ask other Key Terms for more information.
Leveling Up (Optional but recommended)
Soon you'll be entering a dungeon full of monsters. I highly recommend you try to level up your black magic "Fire", "Thunder", and "Blizzard" to level 3 because you'll need them to defeat the boss.
  • Have Firion, Maria, Guy use "Fire", then Minwu uses "Defend".
  • Repeat the other 2 "Blizzard" and "Thunder" until you reach level 3.
  • Use Inn to restore MP.

  • C-014: Mythril - After defeating the boss.
Once you defeated the boss and picked up Mythril. Minwu uses "Teleport" magic to exit the cave.
07. Altair - Deliver Mythril
Our next objective is to bring Mythril to the rebels, so we have go back to Altair, but we'll stop by Salamand to heal up and buy some magic.

Boss: Borghen
This man is pretty easy. You can simply auto-attack.

Head back to Poft, then buy the airship ticket to Kashuan Keep.

I also highly recommend you buy at least one "Cottage" in Poft because we'll venture into 2 dungeons without any towns nearby.

There is good equipment available in Mysidia, so I highly recommend you stop by before going further. Enter the armor shop and buy "Thief's Gloves" for everyone.

* IMPORTANT**: There is a super rare bestiary "Iron Giant", which has 1.6% of encountering here (also 5F and 6F). Try running around until you get him.

You've collected all treasure chests at this point. The achievement should pop up as soon as it detected the completion.

Pandaemonium - 9F, 10F

There is nothing on this floor but full of "Dragon"; it's a good place to level up.
Step on the portal (L) in the bottom-left corner to the last floor, 10F.
  • Use Elixir to fully heal HP/MP
  • Review your equipment again
  • Make a quick-save and prepare for the final boss fight:
Boss: Emperor
Before the fight, have one of your strongest mages learns Osmose.

Strategy:
  • Set everyone to the back row except your main fighter.
  • Dual-wield your fighter with the strongest weapons and make sure he has the highest Evasion stats (try different armor to boost his/her Evasion).
  • 1st turn, use Sage's Wisdom or Saint's Spirit on whoever is your strongest mage.
  • next, have your strongest mage use Blink Tomes, Haste Tomes, Berserk Tomes on your fighter.
  • Everyone else can keep healing.
  • Your fighter keeps attacking the boss.
  • And your strongest mage should keep using the above tomes if you have left.
  • Then use Osmose to absorb boss's MP until he cannot use magic anymore.
Achievements
These are the two achievements that you need to spend time grinding in order to complete them.
Magic Tactics and Weapon Tactics require you to level up one magic spell and one weapon type to level 16 respectively. Because you won't be able to reach level 16 in a normal game play, I've listed the strategy below on how to easily get them.

Magic Tactics
The easiest spell to reach level 16 is "Cure", as you can use it outside of the battles and gain experience. The trick is you want to damage yourself, then using "Cure" to heal everyone.

Strategy:
  1. Go to Mysidian Tower, 3F, you'll find larva floor there.
  2. Step on the larva tile, you will take 1 damage.
  3. Open your inventory -> magic, then cure everyone individually.
  4. Repeat step 1 until you reach level 16.
Weapon Tactics
The problem with skill level is that when it gets higher, you'll start the battle with a negative experience. It requires you to attack a dozen of times to actually gain a positive experience. Sadly, most of the monsters cannot withstand many hits.

So the trick is that instead of attack monsters, you attack your ally or yourself. Then you heal and repeat. Fortunately, there is a Blood Sword that can heal when attacking and this will come in handy for our strategy.

Strategy:
  1. Open your Menu -> Configuration, change the "Cursor Memory" on. This will allow the game to remember your last cursor location.
  2. Equip the Blood Sword on anyone and a strong shield on the other hand, then raise the Evasion to 99% so that the monster cannot hit you.
  3. Kill all other allies to speed up the battle.
  4. Then start a battle with an easy monster.
  5. Attack yourself; with the Blood Sword you will take the damage then immediately heal yourself.
  6. The next round, the cursor, will be targeted yourself, so you can simply hold down "X" button or "Enter" key (for keyboard) for several dozen times.
  7. Repeat until you reach level 16.
